I have a 98 gt with the mods listed below and when i rev the engine smoke comes out the tail pipes. not a lot but noticeable (it is kinda light blue and white). it is definetly not black. Is this normal with no cats or is my engine gone.

Do you see any white stuff inside your coolant? You head gaskets might be gone.

I don't think having no cats would change the color of your exhaust- certainly the smell though. Blue smoke usually means oil is being burned. If it was white too (water/coolant) then maybe your head gaskets are going, like 40th said.

Thanks checked on it again today and it is more light blue, not really white. The car has 98000 miles is that a lot or is it normal to start going bad.

I'd say it's normal with that kind of mileage. My friend has a 95 Cougar with an NPI 4.6, and his valve stem seals are gone. I've heard that that was a common high mileage problem with those engines. My suggestion to you would be a full P.I. swap, since you'd be into the heads for the seals anyways.

One quick question:
Does it only puff out a little cloud when you first start it up, or does it do it always? Or maybe just under high RPM? Pull the breather hose off of your valve cover, and see if alot of smoke comes out. If you have a ton of smoke, or a crapload of oil splatter, I'd say your rings are gone.

this is what i was thinking. My car has 94000 miles and its still driven pretty hard. It burns a little oil (about a qt. every 3k miles) but not a hint of smoke. Thats completely normal. with time the rings wear down and bit and let some oil by. The blue smoke is def. oil, so maybe your rings are just a little too worn and they let by enough oil to make it smoke.....either way, blue smoke is def not good.

BTW, the only normal smoke that can come out of your exhaust because you have no cats is black smoke. white=coolant, blue=oil, white=fuel. If you run a little rich top end (like most untuned bolton cars) you will get black smog/carbon out of your pipes...thats common and normal.

thanks i think it is a seal , i leak some oil from the driver side valve cover. I put an air breather to keep it from bringing oil into the cai. I hope it can last 6 more months. Still runs good just beat a turbo audi. Not a big deal but oh well..
