Exhaust Sound

I installed a set of 40 series Flowmasters into my '14 GT and am happy with them, but I would like to get a deeper throatier tone closer to what the 4.6 sounded like in '03/'04. With the exception of the 40 series axle backs all other exhaust components are factory. Any suggestions?

You might consider 'resonator deletes" where the resonators (the little bulges in the tailpipe just ahead of the axles) but drone may occur and nobody likes a boomy cabin, lol. Off-road or aftermarket catted H-pipe deepens the tone but the resonator deletes seem to be a popular exhaust enhancement. I had GT500s initially (came that way) but I switched to Borla S-types (killer deal on them). Honestly, the GT500s have a deeper tone, imho, but are somewhat quieter - more aggressive than stock, for sure. The RTR mufflers (by Magnaflow) sound good to my ears, too. That's all I can offer but YT has a lot of different combinations to enjoy.

Thanks for the feedback. At the moment I have 40 series Flowmaster axle backs and resonator delete. You did mention O/R catted H pipes would give a deeper tone...would the tone be deeper then the factory catted H pipe that I have now?

I didn't realize that you already had resonator deletes - they do a good job of enhancing the volume. I would be concerned that an o/r h-pipe with resonator deletes will be quite loud, maybe a little blatty but the chambered mufflers will help to tame blattiness/rasp, i think. I am not an exhaust sound expert, so be warned, lol. That's why I suggested YouTube as a (reasonable) source for clips.

An aftermarket catted H-pipe will improve the sound volume and keep the rasp to a minimum but i don't think it is going to deepen the tone. The off-road H-pipe will awaken the exhaust further but it might be too much without the resonators. Not sure what your tolerance is for decibels (or your neighbor's toleance for decibels) so go carefully when opening up the exhaust.

As follow-up, I popped over to YT and listened to GT500's and my S-types and, sure enough, the GT500's sounded deeper to my ears. I am thinking that your Series 40's (chambered mufflers) are about as deep as you will get. Long tubes would help (to deepen the tone) but they're tough to install even on the 5.0 and kinda pricey if you're on a budget. Of course, generating more power will deepen the tone although that's going to be a much more expensive way to go.

No real good direction to offer other than YT and finding some Mustangs in your area to listen to (much better than a video).

Great sounding exhaust! Thanks for posting the video. I get the feeling that the exhaust is louder in person (compared to other videos I have listened to). But the tone is very nice (low, mean).

How about moving the mufflers back as in making then cat backs as opposed to axle backs? I thought I read somewhere that that would deepen the tone.

Anyone tried hearttrob muffler eliminator?, I want a very aggressive sound but without drone inside :/.

Sorry but I don't know if moving the mufflers upstream would deepen the tone. It's a question for somebody who has done it or an acoustical engineer. Doesn't Pypes offer some round race mufflers that are upstream of the axle?

On my old '98, the mufflers were under the seats and the cabin would bet pretty boomy (resonance/drone) at 1800 to 2000 rpm but it was tolerable. I suspect that Ford moved the mufflers to keep the cabin quiet.

Borla Atak axle-back is very aggressive but droneless. Corsa Extremes, too. I have never heard the Hearthrob mufflers but you could run a search (here and on other forums) for 'drone+hearthrob' and see if anything shows up.

I'm going to stay with the 40 series I have now. I am fairly happy with them I was just thinking of what to add for deeper town whether it be headers aftermarket exhaust pipes etc...I'm still building it so I will definitely keep you posted as I go along.

I went with 40 series flowmasters because I've been happy with everything I have put them on...so of course I didn't stop with my 14 Mustang. I am happy with them although I'm sure as you read I am looking for a deeper tone which I'm sure would come with other components. Anyway back to the roush...I would go with 40 series flows over the roush axle backs. In doing research before I bought...the Borla, Roush and the 40s don't sound much different - I don't think. When you buy the Roush you're basically paying 300+ for a set and The Flowmaster 40s are 150 for a set. Having said that...I think with Roush you're kind of just paying for the name....I'm sure they make great mufflers, but that's just my opinion...
