Hi everyone,

I'm not much of a car person so please forgive me for not knowing the proper technical terms but I'll do my best to explain what I mean clearly.

I have a 2001 Mustang GT with no modifications at all. The only thing I've done to it is put new tires on it. What can I do to make the car sound better? I'm thinking it would be exhaust, and if so, what options are available to me to upgrade the exhaust? I searched the forums for some answers before posting however I didn't understand most of what I was reading. My main goal is to make the car sound better but if it's possible to make it more fuel efficient or even give me more horsepower (I'm not even sure if that's possible) then that would be a plus. What does everyone here recommend? Thanks!

Listen to some clips there, pay attention to the ones that use the stock H pipe too. After you find one you like, post up so we can tell you about the specific setup you like.

I would say go to www.mustangexhaust.com and listen to some sounds clips and see what you like!. Everybody has different choices.

If you just want a cheap upgrade in sound then just have some original 40 series flowmasters mufflers welded into the stock system. the mufflers are about $60 each, and a muffler shop should be able to weld them on for around $75 to $100.

Thanks for the link. I listened to a few of them and I liked some of the H-Pipes better than I did the X-Pipes. Could someone explain the difference to me between the two, please?

The two that I listened to and liked from the H-Pipes were the 2 Chamber Factory H Factory '01 Mustang GT and the Delta 40 Factory H for the '01 Mustang GT (those were the names as they appeared going across the screen from left to right). To be honest, I couldn't tell a whole lot of difference between the aforementioned two. Thanks!

The H pipe is just that, the two pipes come together in an H pattern but basically remain seperate aside from the crossover tube in the middle. The stock GT has an H pipe. The X pipe is just the exhaust pipes shaped like an X, where they cross in the middle and mix gases like that. Both mufflers you listed are made by Flowmaster, which has a great musclecar sound but will not give you the best performance being that it is a chambered design as opposed to straight through like Magnaflow or Borla. You'll gain a little power from a flowmaster cat-back, but not quite as much as a cat-back from another company.

A cat-back and mid-pipe (the H or X pipe) can be done in your driveway with basic hand tools, not a tough job but good to have a buddy around to help. I'm personally going with a catted X-pipe and the Steeda cat-back. It's not the loudest system out there, especially with cats, but it should pick up a few horses I just think Flowmasters sound like old pickups, there's a million of them around here and I'd rather be different.

To be honest I'm still confused. I'm not sure what a "cat-back" or a "mid-pipe" is. I'll search the forums to see what I can find. I'm just looking for something to make the car sound better and get better performance (if that's even possible, like I said before). Thanks.

if you look undr your car from the front the piece that looks like a h is your h pipe prolly has 4 cats on it 2 on each side, the cat back is bolted to the h pipe and runs to the back of the car, If you want a nice sound and wanna stay on the cheap side you can get 2 (2 1/4') flowmasters,magnaflows,or dynomax race magnums welded in you stock cat back , thay wil give you a nice sound, it will remain pretty quiet unless at wot. you will please with the sound , or if you want it LOUD get a slp cat back , prolly the loudest out there...Jayson

I also have an '01 and just installed the magnaflow catted X pipe and the magnpack cat back. A buddy and I did it in the drive way, just make sure you have jack stands. I was in the same situation you are in. I wanted good sound and anything extra would be a plus. Let me say that I have not had one negative comment one the sound yet and I absolutely love it. I didn't go with flowmaster because all my friends had it and I wanted to be different. They all agree that they like the way my car sounds better then theirs.
