Could someone explain, or have a link to a good article, about balancers. How do they work? What do they do? How do they go bad? etc.

I have heard that a crank and balancer are balanced together as a unit. So how do you buy an aftermarket balancer without tearing the bottom end down?

Many thanks for any help on my newbish question.

Well it harmonizes the engine and balances it out. Im not an expert on it, but just finished changing mine 15 mins ago. When you put it on theres a keyhole so it only goes on one way. How does it go bad? well i dropped a bolt and started the car and cracked mine almost in half. Im sure someone here can tell you more.

HB's help cancel out torsional vibration from the combustion process.

The imbalance (28, 50 oz, etc) has to be matched with regard to the HB, crank and flywheel. On a rebuild, one can set it up however one wants. Mallory can be added to the crank to change the imbalance.

Hehe, funny stuff.

Anyway, back to my question. Can you just buy an off the shelf HB and bolt it on? Or do you need it balanced to match with the crank?

If you have a stock bottom end, then you should be able to go buy a stock (50 oz) HB and be good to go. The PP and Pioneers do well for milder folks - you might want something a little heftier if you drive it hard.

Good luck.
