External fuel pump Q's

Hey, code pulling gave me the "bad fuel pump" code.
If I install a Vortech external with a adjustable pressure regulator (free! )and remove the internal pump by putting an adapter in, will the code go away?
If not, will it matter?
Bad fuel pump would cause lagging, right? Runs and sounds like it has a vacuum leak (smooth, but no power...).
