EZ Wiring harness....any feedback on them?

I have received a link to the EZ Wiring company and was looking at their 21 circuit wiring harness to wire up my mustang. I was originally looking at the Painless harness, but the mustang one they sells is meant for a standard Mustang. I am doing an Eleanor and it will have other things such as fog lamps and a different (shelby) taillight setup. I would have to add to this and change it around. Someone on a different forum said they think they were going to try the EZ wiring because they can customize it and price reasons. I would like to know if anyone has any feedback on them or if anyone knows how hard it would be to use this generic wiring. Thanks Guys.

these days the aftermarket harnesses are all good. they use high quality wire, the wires are marked as to where they go, the fuse boxes use the blade style fuses, and are prewired. you will still have to terminate the ends and trim the wire lengths, but thats easy. ez wire is another company i have looked at for wiring, and i would use them also.

Does this harness come with instructions and connectors for the mustang? Will I have to reuse connectors from the original harness? Also, is the coloring the same as original harness for the mustang? I am guessing not since this is a generic harness. If the Painless harness has connectors I will need though, itmight be worth the extra money. If not, I can save several hundreds of dollars. In your opinion, how hard will this be to install? This is my first resto and will be my first wiring harness. Thanks for the help.

I just got myself the painless full body harness for my 66 mustang, I just started to install it yesterday..the directions and everything are very easy to read and are very explanitory. I know if you just order the plain body harness you can order the different packages like the rally pack or whatever from anyone that sells painless harnesses. I was told that painless was the best way to go and so far its going really good.

I have very little electrical experience, so far its going pretty good, but everyone told me if I take my time its going to come out right....

the ez harness isnt any better than or worse than the generic painless harness neithor of them come with the mustang spefic plugs and both are gm color coded I have installed both and like both bout the same the guy that bought the painless harness bought the all the extras to go with it that made it a little easier to install but the same extras will work with the ez harness as well good luck

I used the ez harness on my 1956 t-bird project and have had no problems with it. If you can read a schematic you will have no problems installing it. Just write down a list of the GM colors and how they coinside with the mustang and go for it. p.s. keep the list for future referance.

It comes with instructions but they are not model specific. The booklet does have many examples of GM, FORD, and Chrysler circuits. The same with connectors and plugs, it has some but they are the more generic types.

Will I have to reuse connectors from the original harness?
You could, or you could get new ones from the parts store. Many light sockets, and such are available new.

Is the coloring the same as original harness for the mustang? I am guessing not since this is a generic harness.
You are guessing correctly, the wires are color coded and labeled but they are not model/make specific. The labeling is very clear.

If the Painless harness has connectors I will need though, itmight be worth the extra money. If not, I can save several hundreds of dollars.
The generic Painless kit isn't any better or complete than the E-Z wiring generic kit, just more expensive. If you are talking about the Mustang specific Painless kit I don't know if it comes with the correct plugs or not.

I don't think it will be very difficult. I have wiring diagrams and plan on taking my time.

I installed an EZ 21 circuit GM colorcoded harness in my 73. You will need to make a detailed list of the corespondance between the GM and Ford colors. A circuit diagram of your mustang and the original harness will be a massive help.

Th diagram that EZ sends is missing a little information. I'll have to look for my old post...

Found it. http://forums.stangnet.com/showthread.php?t=447316&highlight=wiring+harness

Problem I had...

It seems like there was one other thing that threw me off with the install. I think it was the horn circuit and that the ford was a hot circuit while the GM was a ground. That makes no sense huh?

It's like you use a relay for the horn and I initially had it wired wrong so that both sides were conected to hot. (one hot from the wiring harness and the other where I connected it to +12)

Anyway I hope this helps you some.

If you're inexperienced, I'd definitely recommend using the Painless Mustang-specific harness. It's made for the Mustang, comes with everything you need as far as making the connections, is very high quality, and works great. I have done the install.

If all you'll have different is taillights and fog lights, then it's no big deal. The taillights are easy, and the amount of work to do this mod will be exactly the same regardless of what wiring kit you get. In addition, the Painless Mustang harness has a built-in, fused, relay-driven accessory circuit perfect for fog lights up to 20A.

It sounds like maybe the way to go is the EZ for cost and quality. I think I can handle it, and I am not completely uncomfortable with wiring. The only thingis, that my car came as a shell and I do not think I have all the connectors and such. Also, I will have to purchase the grommets and stuff which I have not found online yet. If anyone has any insight to this or info on what they did, that would be great. Thanks.

I entertained the idea of switching over to GM connectors just to simplify the install, but I have no idea where you would buy them or original Ford connectors for that matter. The grommets you can get from mustang aftermarket suppliers, or you can get cheap unisex ones from the local autoparts store.

Take your time on this and don't be afraid to make a list and check it more than twice.

This may work out better than I had hoped. I am going to be replacing the steering column with a tilt wheel, and was toying with putting in a flaming river. I called Mustangs Unlimited and the tech said that that particular column can be used in ford, but has GM connections on it. Wow, that worked out well huh?

I gotta ask...what are you planning to use 21 circuits for?

I got the 18 circuit painless kit and have electric water pump, HID headlights, electric fan, electronic ignition, electric windows, and more. I did not come close to using all 18 and have wires left over for 4X4, cruise control, power antenna etc.

Well, to be honest, I most likely will not use 21 circuits. But the painless harness comes with 12 and I think I might use more than that. I will have a few extras such as fog lights, and other lights on the Eleanor that were not there originally, and a few other extras, car security, etc. Anyway, for the price, I actually cannot find a cheaper harness anyway. Plus, as my father always told me, never get just what you need, get more because you may need it down the road. EZ only offers 2 different normal sized harness', and for a difference of $10, wouldn't you go with the 21 over the 12 circuit? Is there any drawback to having a lot of extra? Thanks.
