Just wondering if anybody has any info on this. I'm in the process of stripping a replacement hatch for paint and I found a whole bunch of body fill. Could this be something they did from the factory or did I get screwed. The metal looks fine from what I can tell. I also found the same type of body fill on the lower rear quarters of my car.

Can't tell from that pic but I think there was no filler use on the hatch from the factory, factory used filler on roof to sail panels but I believe they didn't use plastic type filler, I could be wrong, years ago it was a lead type filler.

You are correct. Roof seams on the A pillar and the roof to said panel area was done with lead-type filler.

You usually see cracks in these areas on older cars without subframe connectors because it's still soft enough to flex a tad

Its weird because the lip and the trim channel are completely clean and it my experience thats where the rust usually is. I'll update as i peel more of it away.

I bought four hatches for my '86, trying to get one with no rust. None had any plastic body filler except for one that we confirmed had been hit and repaired.

Time to go down to harbor freight and buy there Eastwood Surface conditioner knock off lol, should strip the old filler easy, if it ain't to bad you could probably get a way with using high build and blocking most of it. https://www.harborfreight.com/9-amp-surface-conditioning-tool-58079.html

Not factory. Trying to see if there is a pattern but it’s likely that hatch was on an LX, and someone filled in the holes in the middle to mount a GT or Saleen spoiler.

Do those work well?? 20 or so years ago Snap On was selling a " bondo buster" which looked like a large DA sander... My painter would put 60 grit paper on one and take off paint faster than a sand blaster.......

For going to bare metal or cutting threw filler yes.... I bought one mostly to strip mil scale, but have used it to strip some fox body stuff that was showing surface rust, stripped a few hatches with it. I have the eastwood version I can't stand chemical strippers, swore years ago I'd never use it again after the mess it made on one of my mustang, there's a guy using one in this video, to cut threw filler.
