Factory tach and speedo wont work

I was just curious what all could cause this stuff not to work?The speed o cable is hooked up and the guages are hooked up and I cant find any cut wires coming from tach.How do I get them to work?

Speedo:
Check the trans end of the speedo drive. If the gear is missing/damaged, the speedo won't work. Using a reversible drill to turn the speedo cable at the trans end is an easy way to check out the cable and watch the speedo needle move.

sounds like the gear on the end of the speedo is damaged/missing
