Failed Emissions, High NOx, what can I do?

OK, I got a 1350 ppm out of 700 max allowed. So I failed BIG time.

I know that I need to re-connect my EGR, but what else can I do since I only get one free re-test? The tube broke when I did my headers last year and i jsut disabled it since. Can I just bypass the EGR and always have Exhaust going into the intake to pass?

a guy here recommended pulling the SPOUT for the test.

Are there any additives I can use?

Would a bad air pump supply to the high flow cats cause this but allow everything else to pass?

What would someone get to burn a chip for me to bypass the EGR and tune it to pass? Would that be worth any HP on a basically stock motor?

Bypassing EGR offers no HP gain whatsoever. Run a bottle of GTC through it and call it a day. Never failed for me yet!! Just tune it best you can to pass taking precautions and then buy some guaranteed to pass.

Forgot to say that.. I had my high flow cats on it. BUT they are at the tail end oif the pipe and it was a cool mornign (38' out). you think they jsut weren't up to temperature? the car sat a total of about 15-20 minutes before he drove it on the rollers...

Do you have to worry about passing any kind of visual

Just wondering as you said you capped off the egr

reconnect the egr and itll pass. after all, that is one of the egrs main priorities, to reduce Nox

What is your timing set at? If its too far advanced, put it 10*

put in half a bottle of rubbing alcohol with a quarter tank that will help you definately my friends do it all the time and pass i did it once just for peace of mind

Seafoam it or run some Chemtool B12 fuel cleaner in the tank (full) and kill that tank with plenty of W.O.T to help clear carbon and the like build up. Rehook that EGR.....

For the EGR, I mocked up that it was connected for the visual. Ran the pipe next to the cap on the header. Cool guy so I don't know if he didn't notice, didn't care, or jsut looked the other way.

Timing hasn't been played with since I have had the car. It ran fine (no detonation) on 87 octane, then a few months ago i switched to premium and noticed that it jsut ran better and my mileage went up an average of .5 mpg, so now I run premium. Can I simply put an octane booster into the tank to up the octane and get the same effect as backing down the timing. The bolt that holds the dist is sooo rusty i bet it rounds off or breaks...

Guess i'll have to look for some GTC or rubbing alcohol... This won't kill the car or anything?

I also think I am going to run an injector cleaner ahead of time in case it is one cyl running lean...

So plan of attack to pass:

Re-attach EGR, if it is not working due to not holding vacuum i will hold it open somehow.

Run FI cleaner JIC

Either run GTC or Rubbing alcohol in the tank...

Sounds feasible...

I ran the GTC in a 1.6 liter engine and the stang on the old engine first route and passed with no problems.

I'd go back to 87 octane. It seems to me that higher octane (when not necessary) creates more emissions.
