I'm not surprised at all, the guy doing the testing is younger than the car. They have no data on it & couldn't find it even if they tried. They are instructed to follow the "script", if your vehicle doesn't fit the script, you fail.

1987 5.0. Failed California smog test on Friday because check engine light would not turn on when the key is turned to the on position.

Can anybody confirm that 1987 Mustangs, regardless of state and engine, did not have check engine lights?

Thank you

No light, check your owner's manual if you have one. Mine stated my car didn't have a light for 1988.

I'm not in California, from what I have read you can contact a referee and they will confirm the lack of a cel.

For V-8 Only.
'87's had no MAF, & no CEL.
'88's the same, EXCEPT for Calif. cars which did have a MAF.

2.3L did have CEL.
'88 Ford Mustang EVTM shows the CEL on p.43

His signature says: Pro-M MAF sensor
Doesn't say what ECU.

Crap, who reads that stuff anyway!
this is a little confusing, we have two members asking the same basic question, if they would go back and read this thread from the beginning it answers the question.

Doesn't matter for '87. MAF cAn be swapped in but the CEL won't function without an additional wire run to the cluster.

Before we also get the question, 1986 also does not have a CEL. Unsure about the earlier CFI cars.

Cliffs notes:

1986 5.0 - no CEL
1987 5.0 - no CEL
1988 5.0 - only CA Factory MAF cars have it
1989+ 5.0 - All have CEL
