Failed the Smog test today. I had too high hydrocarbons. The guy said the car is probably mis-firing. What should I do?
I also failed the MIL/check engine light part. What should I do about that?

I little history of my car. I bought used and it came with an off-road h-pipe. I welded some cats on the onto the pipe. I'm not sure if the guy who owned it before had gotten MIL elimators on it. But the check engine light isnt on.
Last time i smog it it wasnt a problem.

Thanks for the help

Does anybody know a smog friendly place in Southern California

check and see if there are any codes that dont flash the CEL. what kind of cats are on the pipe? i dunno about farther south, but around here they (CARB) have been sending around a lot of undercover cars and issuing fines to the shops here.

If the smog guy knows anything about mustangs he wont pass because they aren't the original cats, in ca they wont pass any thing that has aftermarket high flow cats or anything like that.

the previous owner had MIL eliminators on the car. if you did not remove the eliminators and put the sensors back in, that is your problem.

Do they smog test in every state? I live in Indiana and haven't ever seen smog testing. Could this be a future problem?

Usually high hydrocarbons come from a whole lotta different things, i dont stickers in MA. it could be a bad maf, map, 02sensor, a dirty air filter, if u havent changed your oil in a while, just a whole junk load of things. theres 2 tests that we do, a 2speed idle, which he did to ur car, and then the dyno test, which he should have done. Im almost positive if u go to another station and do the dyno test that you'll pass with flying colors. just make sure that the guy does thae dyno test or else u'll probably fail again. but just for safety sake, id check all ur connections, ur plugs, air filter. run some high test in the car with some fuel injector cleaner for about a week u should be fine..

And make sure the car 100% up to temperature when the test starts. Spark plugs can also be a culprit.

Cheps where in So Cal are you? There is a place in Hollywood that will pass you. Might cost you an extra 20 bucks, but they passed my friends car which is hardly legal.
