I went to get my pony smogged today and the guy was pretty nice. He told me that my K&N filter was an aftermarket filter and I needed to have the legal sticker with some emissions legal number or the original filter. He also said that I couldnt pass with the check engine light on. It only comes on while the the key is turned all the way while Im starting the engine. he said I wouldnt pass with these 2 things. So how do I fix them?

For the K&N intake, where can i get the sticker for it? I dont really want to waste money on an original setup and then just take it off when Im done.

Why the hell is the check engine light comming on when the ignition is turned all the way? The only codes i am pulling are some circuit fault for the fuel pump. There also seems to be a bad connection with the clutch electrical stuff. Could that cause it?

x2...sounds as if you mean that the light only comes on briefly as you're starting it and it goes off immediately afterwards? is that right? that shouldn't be problem, sounds like the guy is messing w/ you. as for the C.A.R.B. sticker for the air filter, try the classifieds here or the corral...i'd place a want ad in one of those classifieds. hell, everybody has one of those laying around somewhere...i bet i do, but i'm in the middle of moving sooo, not sure i'll be able to find it. good luck

I agree about the CEL. It comes on for a prove-out to show that it works (just like your battery light comes on, though your charging system is fine).

To make yourself happy, you can pull codes just to confirm that there is nothing there (there could be a non-critical code stored).

Good luck.

no, that won't work. you'll probably need the actual sticker, but at the very least you will need the C.A.R.B. exemption number

yeah, if the CEL is coming on for a brief second after you start it up and than it goes off than your car is working fine. tell the guy hes a moron, if it didnt come on at all he should fail you. i swear i hear some crazy stories about inspectors sometimes and it makes me want to smack someone.

i live in texas and some places are real tough on emmisions, i belive more so the mechanic can make a little more money off of you, i see you have taken care of the sticker problem if not, if you still have the air box a house brand filter from an auto parts store cant cost moe than 10 bucks and as far as the check engine light is concerned, more than likley the inspector will not hook up the computer to the car so for thirty minutes of work just take out the cluster and pull out the light. you can fix the problem later if you choose to do so.

Did they even let you test your emissions levels?

Contact K&N for a sticker.
I doubt it would be more than a couple of bucks.
Probably cost more to ship the stupid thing.

Try a different smog station. Smog stations, and the techs that work them, are just like politicians and judges. Some want to stick to every last letter of the law, no matter how pointless or finicky (ie. any automotive tech of any sort should not in a billion years give you **** over not having a smog sticker for a K&N air filter, for fu*k's sake it's not as if you're running an Edelbrock Victor setup with full length headers, etc.) While others will barely look your motor over for a smog pump and EGR, and check for cats, etc...and just run the test, they won't give you any headache so long as the numbers are under their respective limits. In other words, roll the dice again with a different smog station.

Right...
But if there is another problem it would be nice to know it after the first test.

Say you fix the CEL and get the sticker...
Now you get on the dyno and run the car through the paces....
The car fails on HC cause the cats are 15yrs old...
So now you have one more thing to fix.....
And have to go back to the test facility again after the repairs.

Do you get to retest for free?

Here in Seattle WA, the first test is $15, the second retest is free, but all tests after the second are $15.

Keep us posted,

jason

I had the same issue a few years back I have a BBK cold air intake, actually I was sent to have the inspection done by the state referee and he said that he couldn't run the inspection until I have the stock filter set up. Good thing I kept the stock filter and plumbing.

Since then I just spend about 10 minutes replacing the BBK with the stock set up before going to the smog check, and exchange it back when done .

$15 for smog??? The cheapest I have found in Cali is $40 and thats 1 test only. There are a few that charge $57 for basically 2 chances to pass. Im going to pic up the sticker and/or filter from a friend and try it again today.
