Has anyone ever experienced a failing torque converter before? And if you have...what were the symptoms like?

This summer I experienced tranny fluid breakdown from the heat. The fluid was only a year old but it made the converter slip like a worn out clutch. I replaced the fluid and it seems to be working fine. Don't know if this is what you were looking for.

Some days it will run great, others it will feel like poo. Sometimes you'll hear a grinding noise, sometimes at a light it wont want to move...

I rareley hear of a converter going bad. it's ushally the clutches inside of the tranny that start to fail first. give it a good flush and with only 52k you should beable to run some merc v in there.

My converter is going.

It slips when the car is hot, making the car feel like a manual with the clutch only partially engaged (or not engaged at all).

I've also heard that a bad converter can overhead your fluid, causing other transmission problems (like failure to shift).

Yeah...like bjl95mustang said, it's unlikely for a converter in a stock car to go. Mine is going most likely because I like to launch with my nitrous spraying...a whole spring and summer of a 125 shot through it tends to wear on a stock converter.

I would still put my money on the tranny clutches.

Mine went out on my 92. basically it was fine, then one day I gave it all she had and manually shifted into second, then third and BANG. nothing but free rev after that. Once it blew it threw chunks through the whole tranny leading to a slightly warmed over rebuild and a new edge converter.

Are you sure it wasent the 2 piece shaft that broke? The aod uses a 2 piece shaft bto controll the converter. The newer aode uses a 1 piece shaft and electronic lockup.

No the lock up shaft was fine. I was actually going to reuse it but decided to get a hardened one instead. Still have the old one for a head thumper if anyone needs it The repair shop said the converter blew throwing chunks into the pump and then sending pieces through out the tranny
