I put in a new alternator and for some reason, I am having issues w/ the belt. It is the same model alt as the one I removed wit the exception that the new alt has only room for one belt whereas the old one had room for 2.

when I start the car, the main wheel spins, the fan stops and goes, and the Alt does not spin at all. I get these results wether I give it no slack or the 1/2 inch recommended in my manual.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Is the belt the same old one or new one? If the belt is glazed over it won't grab. With the engine on, try holding a bar of soap on the belt where it contacts the pulleys. Becareful and don't push too hard on the soap but hold the soap firmly, or you'll cut your hands up. If the belt start grabbing the pulleys, then your belt is worn, or maybe you got some grease on the pulleys/belt during installation.

I will try that.

Is is possible that the groove in the wheel on the alternator is wider or deeper than the other. It sems like the belt is getting pulled into the groove tighlightly causing it to bind rather than being pulled around causing it to turn.

Also, is it possibly to pull the wheel off the old alternator and swap it onto the new one?
