Fan Shroud Question?

Hey Guys,

I had posted a ealier post on a Fan shroud and had another. I have a 69
Mustang with a 3 core 20" radiator. I also have 17" fan. I was having
heatup issue at idle so I decided to add a shroud. I received the factory
shroud and there is plenty of clearance on top but its going to hit on the
bottom. I have to say my fan needs a least 1/2" more clearance on the
the bottom. I checked the Radiator and it is as low as it will go. Do I need
to trim the bottom of the shroud so the fan doesn't hit it? Is there something

Engine too low

Had the same problem on my 65. The engine sat too low in the compartment, had to add 4 spacers on each side of the mounts to get it up high enough to clear the shroud. Eventually went to the 66 mounts and raised the motor up an inch. Not sure how the 69 mounts are but see if there is a place to add the spacers.

I had a clearance problem that was similar... The bottom part of the shroud on my 66 is supposed to sit between the fan and the radiator, and was in a bit of interference with the blades. The first time I got it up to about 5500 rpm, I though I blew the engine. I heard "waahhhhhhWWAHAAAAAAAAAHHHHH slapslapslapslapslapslap"

Turned out the fan blades expanded, the shroud kinda collapsed from the vacuum, and sucked the bottom part of the shroud up into the blades

I did a bit of trimming. I think my T5 swap also changed the angle of the engine. Also... I have horrible luck with fan shrouds

What about moving the shroud a bit with modified brackets?

IMO either raise the motor or trim the shroud. I don't know what kind of tools you have access to, but those are the easiest solutions to your problem. Good luck.

I have a 17.5" blade and I bought a new Summit Fan that was 17" to help
save on some room. Its still about 1/2" to long. I guess I don't really what
to raise the engine. So i'll do some cutting on the new shroud. I did buy
a longer spacer and it puts it closer to the radiator and also closer to the
lower hose. Do you think at high RPMs it could flex and hit the hose. There
is a little more than a 1/4 in clearence between the hose and fan blade.

Remember Murphy's Law... would you want to be stuck somewhere if it did? It *might* be OK, but I wouldn't trust it at all. I'd have to also ask is the fan blade and shroud meant to be run together? Sounds like they're not. Not sure tho.

It's possible that it will flex and hit the hose. I had a similar problem and I even thought about trimming the fan blades. But, I decided to go with an electric fan instead.

get a stock fan and you should have about 1/2 play up and down on the factory shroud. I have a 68 with factory v-4 and A/c. The orginal / Repo fan shroud and brackets had enough play for me to adjust it out of clearance issues. I know that made a shroud difference in cooling in that mustang. You might want to check your engin mounts.

Is this an A/C car? I think that the AC cars used a 24" radiator and a 17 inch fan. I just bought a 15" fan from Summit and it fixed my problem.

This is a problem that I am also going to get into soon, not just as easy as slapping in a fan and shroud, not all fans need shrouds, this quote caught my attention: "X-fans don't need shrouds; all other fan types do. Flex fans, clutch fans and multi-type fans need shrouds to incress air velocity through the radiator. The fans must extend halfway out of the shroud to move the greatest amount of air. If you bury the fan in the shroud, you loose airflow; back the fan out of the shroud and you loose air velocity."

I installed the shroud and a spacer to put the fan a little more closer to
the radiator and it just prolonged the high temps a little longer. Im thinking
Electric Fans now.
