Fan stays running?

I posted this in the SVT forum also but not as many people read it.

When I came home from work today I turned my car off closed the doors, locked it, all that good stuff. Walked up to my apartment and I heard the fan in my car running. I poped the hood and there it was, just spinning it's ass off. I started the car two times and turned it off and the fan wouldn't shut off.

I drove it for two blocks and then when I turned the car off it shut off.

WTF? Is something wrong? Why would it do that? They keys were in my pocket, they wen't in the ignition.

Please help me.

If it never shut off with the car, the relay in the ccrm is sticking, next time it does it, tap the ccrm with a screwdriver and see if it shuts off.

The fan can run at ANY point in time. Most electrics have a sticker on them stating that. I'd have waited 2-3 minutes and seen if it just kicked out on it's own. Also,was it quite hot where you were?

I don't think the factory ones will run with the key off though will they?

How does it read the ECT with the EEC off?

The sensor reacts to the temperature and requires to electronic activation. It's wired from a constant power source and it trips a relay inside the ECU(again does not require the car to be on). If you do a thorough search you'll find threads talking about grounding a wire going to the ECU to kick in the fan all the time(for cooling down the car at the track).

the pcm never really shuts off unless the battery is unhooked

The relays aren't in the ECU, they have a seperate comstant current control module with the relays, I think the constant voltage only supplies the keep alive memory, so only the ccrm and KAM has constant battery voltage, pin 17 for high or 14 for low are ecu outputs / ccrm inputs.

it's rare for the coolant temp to be high enough to run the fan with the engine off. The next time it does this see how long it will stay running for.

CCRM's are known to go bad, over the years we have had many problems with them, mostly in escorts but some mustangs too. Now I can't tell witht he info provided if this is a normal condition or if you have a problem. If you can get us you engine coolant temp just before you shut it off that would be helpfull

I waited about 5 mins and it didn't shut off. Also it was't very hot yesterday. The operating temp was about the same as it always is. The needle was on the M on the word normal.

So from what I'm reading it might have been running a little warm and that's why the fan kept running?

Can't judge by that stupid factory indicator. Just like oil pressure,anything between 175 and 220 registers 'm' on the guage.

Unless they've changed it on different years. Mine is not wired to come on when the engine is off. I've seen other cars that do like a nissan I used to have. I'm looking at the wiring diagram for a 99 gt. All of the relays require key on power. Most cars that have that feature will do it on a regular basis because the coolant temp will rise in the first few minutes after you shut it off because of heat soak.

Most vehicles state that their electric fans can come on with the car off if the temp is high enough.


If your fan is running after turning the car off, then maybe you should investigate your cooling system a bit. Might be time for a flush and fresh coolant

No I think you have a problem there. probally a bad ccrm.
