My 89 5.0s fan is cracked and about to fall apart. What is everyones advice on electric fans? which ones are best? JEGS has a PROFORM fan for 125 bucks is that good? and how do electrics work? do you just plug them into something? does it end up shortening your belt or what?

the proform fan is good,i've had mine for almost a year now and no problems.it dosn't just plug in though but it doesn't change the belt size.

how do you do it then? do you have to wire a bunch of stuff?

it only takes 3 or 4 wires.if you can read and hook up a car stereo then your in luck.it's like 1 ground wire and a couple of hot wires.

Make sure that you get a large enough fan to cool your engine though. You can get an electric fan that is too small to cool it and then you will be forced to either get a larger one or get a push fan and mount it on the outside of the radiator.

As for wiring it, there is nothing to it. You can do it the easy way and wire in a switch and mount it on the dash somewhere or be technical and cool about it and wire in a relay to automatically turn on.

if you are looking at prefabbed aftermarket fans like that, here is an alternative. go to the junkyard and get an oem fan (search in here for what to get). the most common are the Mark 8 fan, SN95 fan, 3.8L taurus fan (cougar fans and many others work).

then with the money you save, get a controller from:

i dont have one, but would if i had the money. reportedly a very nice unit! Yount, TMoss, RydeOn, et al seem to like them very much. the total cost will be near a wash since you got the fan for cheap. i hear it is very easy to wire in also (Michael has an article about how he did his, as a resource as well if needed).

the water pump and belt stay the same - just no mech fan/fan clutch assembly bolted up.

i would caution that a 3G alternator would be almost a prerequisite.
