I have an appointment tomorrow to get gears in my stock 1998 Mustang GT. I want the car to be more fun to drive, I am not out to race everybody so I am not sure if I should go all the way to 4:10 gears or 3:73.
I have 2:73 right now.
I have a 1985 Mustang GT and I went from 2:73 gears to 3:55 and thought it was alot. I am afraid that first gear would be useless and my car would be screaming going down the freeway with 4:10s.

I have a 96 and wouldn't trade the 4.10's for 3.73's. The 86's dealt better with 3.55's because of the lower red line but the 4.6 rev a little higher so the 4.10's are not too much. It is a myth that you lose 1st gear. That is the most fun gear now. If you have an after market exhaust then the drone on the freeway could be much. I have an O/R X with the stock mufs and gets a little loud between 2500 and 3000 RPM's. I just keep it above 3000 in 5th at 90 MPH and I have no problems.

What coramprat said... I keep mine around 2500 on the freeway to stay out of the 2000-2200 of the flows w/4.10's. The speedlimit - 60 here in Seattle is right in the middle of the drone! Otherwise, awesome...

Get the 373's esp. if you ever plan to get a power adder.
If you have to ask 4.10's are probably too much for your taste.
I have 373's they're perfect. Unless you just want a more for a race car -
My car cruises perfectly at 85-90 mph too for those long across Texas road trips.

Fearing the gear

What RPM are you running with 4:10s at 70 or 80 mph?

Does a 98 GT really have 2.73 gears?

If I had it to do over again, that's exactly where I would be! I debated on gears, and the 4.30's wouldn't have been too bad for me.

If you don't do your cruising at 90 MPH, you won't have much to worry about.

I'm close to 2800 rpm with 3.73's at 80mph.. For long trips i couldn't deal with 4.10s on the highway

the 98's came stock with 2.73's, thats what mine had too. You could get 3.27s as an optional upgrade. but anyways, get the 4.10s i definately dont regret it and think they work great!

For power adder applications I would go with 3:73. Otherwise, 4:10 is just fine.

despite what anyone else in here says, i'd break them in to ensure no whining.. and replace the fluid/friction modifier at 500 miles
