long story short...i moved my distributor on accident while the car ws running with the spout conn out...when i went to shoot the light on the balancer to set the timing i noticed the crappy ford balancer(that i bought not to long ago) decided to flake the paint off only on the part that has the timing marks....i tried to set the timing by ear(my car is loud at idle so i can hear the change as the dist in turned) to get it to sound as it did before...tighted the dist down and replaced the spout.. but when i went to go drive the car it suges at idle like crazy all the time...i drives ok when you are on the gas.... anybody have suggestions on what i can do to resolve this?? thanks

Yup get a timing gun cause that's the ONLY way to set the timing back to 10* where it needs to be

Damn hate to say it but a new balance sounds like the only answer. Since there is no way to figure out where the 10* mark was. SOAB had to flake off right there.

There are marks on there. I used a white colored pencil to mark the 10* mark so its nice an easy to see where your timing is at.

yeah...but they are etched into the paint so once the paint goes you can barely barely make them out especially at 800 or so rpm with a timing light...

Find TDC on the #1 cylinder

Pull out the spark plug on the #1 cylinder and put your finger over the hole. Have someone turn over the engine by hand until you start to feel air pushing on your finger. When the air stops being pushed out, it should be at TDC. Not exact, but it should be close enough. At that point, the rotor on your distributor should be pointing to the "1."
Good Luck.

thanks for the help guys! i smudged some white out over the timing marks that are etched in the balancer and it filled them in...its not pretty or 100% clear but it worked well enough for me to see the marks ...
