I recently cleaned a MAF that had not been cleaned since it left the factory (119K miles). The build-up was several factors thicker than the elements themselves.

Really, rubbing alcohol? I want to clean out the one on my GT but when i did it before on my old V6 i used this little spray can of electrical contact cleaner I bought at advance and it worked very well.

I think alcohol is best because of how it evaporates. Thats the key to it, you don't want any residue around.

I clean my MAF once a year.

It's not rocket science and there are a few things that work. I like to just make sure that the last product I spray on there is known to be residue-free.
I also choose to use electrical contact cleaner. I've used rubbing alcohol too. CRC (I think that's right) has a new MAF cleaner out there (I wanna compare ingredients of it to Electrical contact cleaner) too. That makes it a no-brainer.

Good luck.
