does the black/blue side face up? also, do I need to use the inserts that come with them?

when i tore the stock intake off few years back the factory gaskets had the silicone part facing up. those inserts, if you dont want your egr use the solid ones, if you want egr passages open use the ones with the little holes and put a very light layer of silicone around it.
