Is there a practical purpose for lowering Mustangs?

I know some people here are strong advocates of dropping... but I have never seen the point or much of a difference.

Can someone clarify?

Not sure how you can not notice a difference:

#1 reason, a better looking stance - elimination of wheel well gap
#2 reason, coupled with suspension and handling mods, bringing down the center of gravity is a great addition to those changes

Let me re-clarify...

What I should have said was, I don't see enough difference that generates such strong beliefs.

I actually think the stance looks absolutely fine with no drop.

But then again I have not done any suspension or handling mods.

Its all about how someone drives their car..If you drive like a grandmama, you wont want springs or suspension mods done..If you drive aggressivly when the time is right, you will want your car to handle better..And when you have extra horsepower, you will want to harness the power more..You having a v-6, Id say you dont need suspension at that horsepower level...

Eh...

I dont always drive conservatively yet the stock setup is surely not incapable.

Ford's suspensions are pathetic compared to other cars period. They're 4x4's. Everything Ford makes, including the GT, is a 4x4. Take a look at a Corvette, or an older Camaro or Firebird. You don't have to stop at sports cars, though. The fact is, the majority of cars out there have less wheel gap than Ford's flagship sports car. Here's a before and after lowering. I'd say the difference is quite noticeable. Even after almost 1.5", there's still plenty of clearance for pretty much any kind of driver with the stock wheels/tires.

Darkfire GT...

Those comparison pics probably had the adverse effect you thought they would.

I see so little difference between the two pictures that I still do not see what all the fuss is about.

I will take you guys' word for it, regarding performance... but I just don't see much difference visually.

Seriously? Most people notice right away.

But trust me. Pull yours up next to someone with over a 1" drop on their Mustang, and you will DEFINITELY notice a difference.

Both Dark's and my car's rear sets up even after being lowered. I searched high and low until I found a spring set that dropped the front more than the rear to keep the "raked" look. Also having the 28"+ rear tire helps too.
226, even if you swap your factory springs out for a stiffer set with little to no drop, you WILL notice a change in how the car handles!
