fiberglass bumpers

Has anybody used fiberglass bumpers on their II before ?? How did you mount them ?? Looking for ideas before I start.

I first stripped the original bumper covering off,split and cleaned the rusty insert,and welded some metal tabs on it. Fitted the cover(used some self tapping screws to help with alignment) and fiberglassed the bumper to the tabs on the top and bottom. After I was satisfied with that ,and before removing the self tappers, I used spray foam to attatch the rest and make it more solid.

I used Vette-Bond to goo the MAS fiberglass bumpers to the original metal supports. This is the stuff they use to glue Corvette and other Tuperware car's togeather. It worked really well and it has been tested into the triple digit speeds.

thank guys, I never thought about permanently mounting them to the supports before. I'm gonna keep your suggestions in mind for this project.
I like the name " tuperware car ". How do I get Vette-Bond ?? Is it an adhesive that can be obtained from a body shop supplier ??

All I Used is Duraglass right to the metal supports. I havent had any problems as far as them wanting to come off i just let the duraglass run throught the holes while i was installing them. Just another idea

Vette-bond in a adhesive available from auto body supply stores. See the photo with the red circles? The body shop sand blasted the bumper support and applied Vette-Bond to the two circled areas and the rest of the little tabs and glued the MAS bumpers on. They did the same to the front, but I have no photos. I must of actually been at work that day (I used to visit my car daily to take pictures when, I was supposed to be "managing" a speed shop). The bumper supports were from my old 2+2, I removed the original bumper covers by unbolting and scraping the rubber urathane stuff off. The bumpers can still be removed as before with the 8 bolts (per bumper). They just have straight fiberglass skin instead of wavey bubbly urathane?/rubber? skin. Sorry for the really late reply!

By the way, how much weight will those fiberglass bumpers take off?

I haven't weighed my bumpers, but I talked to a guy once who replaced his with fiberglass ones. He estimated it took off 50-70 lbs each.

I weighed mine when I did the switch. I lost between 25-30lbs each. But I used the factory steel main support. The skin is heavy but not that bad. Especially if you make the fiberglass ones strong enough to withstand street/hiway driving.
