Finally comming home to the States. What do I have to do to my car?

Well I am about to come home from my year long deployment with the Army. What do I have to do to my car to get it going. Before I left I put my car on Jackstands and I took the battery out. I also covered it up with a car cover and put it in my garage.

I figure so far that I should change the oil and oil filter. Any other suggestions? Should I empty out the gas tank?

Change fluids and give it a tune up I would imagine and that should be it. Glad to hear your coming home safe and sound too

I would definately empty out the gas tank. I had nightmares starting the snowblower up after sitting for only 1/2 a year this year, we changed the gas and oil, and it fired right up, no problems. I would also, as the kid said, spring for a tune-up.

I have stored cars for 20 years..A year is really nada if your stored it properly...If you stabilzed the fuel, your good to go...Hopefully you changed the oil BEFORE you stored it??? I myself wouldn't start the motor with stank old oil in it, its not killer or anything with old oil, i just hate the thought of doing it...I'd drain the pan, and at least put 4 fresh qts in it, but thats me....Put a charge on the battery, undo the coil wire, crank it til you get oil pressure on the gage, re-plug the coil and let it rip...let it idle for 10 mins or so to come around...See how it runs...fresh plugs never hurt, thats for sure, specially if there old...

Hey thanks everyone. It is sure gonna be nice to be home.

I Did a tune up before I left and my plugs, coil, and wires are all brand new. (Less than 100 miles) So I will keep that stuff in there. I didn't stabilize the fuel but I did change the oil when I did the tune-up.

I will change the oil and oil filter. I gotta take the gas tank down anyway to check the fuel pump cause it wasn't running right before I left. I will just empty out the gas then.

Is that everything? Can anyone else think of something else? What about the brake and power steering fluids?

I would think the power steering fluid would be fine seeing as very few people change it. The brakes maybe just pull the calipers off and regrease the slides and pray some brake cleaner over the rotors and calipers(do this before you regrease the slides).

My car sat for 5 years while I was in Germany. My brother was supposed to drive it every now and then for me, he went to law school instead. Anyway I just put new tires on, basic tune up stuff, fresh gas and let her rip. Radiator took a dump the first hour, but everything else was fine, drove aound the block a few times with the brakes applied to get the flash rust off the rotors. I've been back for 5 months now, drivind the car everyday, no problems. Oh, replace your windshield wipers, probably dry rotted, often overlooked. Hope that helps, later
