A while back I asked if anyone has found long tube headers that will fit a 65 Mustang with a Mustang II kit. Well a few people replied but no one has yet found a set that would work. I desided, the only way to figure out which headers would fit, is to buy a set try them and if they don't fit return them. (I love America!) :nice:

I have the Rod & Custom tubular control arm kit, with a Lakewoood scatter shield and a Kevko T-sump oil pan. (If the headers will fit mine it will fit anyones :D )

I started with Flow-Tech 12104. They were cheap and from the pictures looked like they would fit. I ordered and they arrived three days later. Unfortunately they don't clear the frame. One of the tubes goes to the outside to clear the steering shaft, thus making it not fit between the frame rails. They also do not clear the T-sump oilpan. They did clear the scatter shield just fine. Hooker SuperComps are exactly the same design so they won't work either.

So then I moved on to Hedman P/N 88390's. I had no picture to go off of and couldn't find a pic anywhere on the internet of them. I did find a pic of P/N 88360, and they looked like they would work. I was guessing that the 88390's would be the same. I ordered and they arrived four days later. As it turns out the 88390's are the exact same design as the 88360's. They clear the frame, the steering shaft, the T-sump pan and the scattershield with no problems. They look like they were made for the kit.

Now I am making my own steering shaft. I don't know if the headers will work with the pre made column kits? I also would imagine that the Hedman 88360's and 88390's would work well with the Heidt's kit too.

One last header that will work, are Mac equal length short tubes.

Headers known to not work:

Flow-Tech P/N 12104 86-93 255-302 1 5/8" primary 3" collector.
Hooker P/N 6111 64-70 260-302 1 5/8" primary 3" collector.
Hooker P/N 16862 86-93 255-302 1 5/8" primary 3" collector.

Headers known to work:

Hedman P/N 88390 79-93 255-302 1 5/8" primary 3" collector.
Hedman P/N 88360 79-93 255-302 1 1/2" primary 3" collector.
Mac P/N 0286 79-93 255-302 1 5/8" primary 2 1/2" collector (short tube)

Headers unknown to work:

Mac long tubes 79-93 255-302 1 5/8" primary 3" collector.
BBK long tubes 79-93 255-302 1 5/8" primary 2 1/2" collector.
Tri-Y headers 64-70 260-302 1 1/2" primary 2 1/2" collector.

Hopefully my loss of a few bucks for shipping will help others out there trying to have long tubes and an MII kit.

oh I knew they bolted on and fit the M2 and all that. I even have pictures. :D

Just don't know if they fit the steering shaft pre-made kits in the way.

I thought in your original post you were asking if the complete kit would clear the headers..

LOL, HUH??

Which headers did you get to fit then? "They" is a little vague.

Yes, I did mean a complete kit? LOL  A simple "Yeah these brand X headers fit, but I'm not sure if it will clear the steering shaft." would have been good enough!

If anyone else has another set that will fit, please share the part number and type.

Thanks

Fostang, I did a search and I think you are talking about Dynomax P/N 85048 1 1/2" primary and 2 1/2" collectors. As for shorties I think just about any will fit. Correct me if I'm wrong?

Thanks

Here ya go. Anyone need motor mounts for a 302 using a heidts kit? It'll come with the steel brackets and rubber mounts. Yeah I dropped a motor in and noticed it looked way to small, so I'm upgrading

I use Hooker Comp 6901-1's. They fit my '65 as follows:

a. Collectors fit inside the frame rails on each side. Flanges are about 3/8"-1/2" from floorboards.

b. Left side tubes are divided into 2x2 arrangement with 2 tubes going over the z-bar equalizer and 2 tubes going under it. The tube passing closest to the bell housing is the 3L tube. It passes very close to the bell housing and since I have a 5.0L motor there is a z-bar pivot adapter bolted onto the bell housing at this point. I had to grind an arc into the pivot adapter to provide clearance for the 3L tube.

c. My car has relief gussets in the sides of the shock towers (left over from a previous 351c installation) and so there is quite a bit of room between the headers and shock towers.

d. There's no problem with my Flaming River steering gearbox and there was also adequate clearance when the stock steering gearbox was there.

e. I have changed motor mounts & frame brackets to the '66 Mustang stamped steel frame brackets/saddle style motor mounts.

I scored a set of Tri-Y's to see if they would fit. They DO NOT fit. The driver side header Does not clear the steering shaft.
