I headed out to englishtown tonight with my buddy Matt. I haven't drag raced at a track in probably 2 years so I was so friggin rusty! I made 3 passes and my best pass was my first one. I went 12.56 @ 115. My launches suck and I shifted into 2nd too soon on this run and when I hit second I felt it slightly bog. I hit a 1.996 60' on that pass which is pretty shiity. 1/8 mile was 8.2 @ 91. My race weight was 3260.

There is so much more in this combo with driving, hooking, proper rear gear and finding out the ideal shift point.

It just sucks that I have to drive into friggin NJ to race :Track: Its so out of the way and i'm not able to go there enough to become consistent with my launching/driving. Oh well, that was my baseline pass.

Mike

Yeah the trap speed is pretty low. It was a baseline run and I haven't done this shiit in like 2 years! I shift about 6,500 but I think I can go higher to around 6,700. That 115 mph pass I messed up and shifted too soon into 2nd and I felt the car kinda bog which hurt me.

I'm not too happy with the time, but at the same time i'm not pissed because I knew I was rusty.

The car ran really well to and from, its such an awesome street car!

I should hit up a dyno and figure out where to shift and such but I may be pulling the heads off this winter for a killer valve job and then upgrading to arp head and manifold studs.

Mike you'll see 11.50's with some good driving and some tuning on that combo ;) I went 11.80's @ 112, 1.7x 60ft, 3150-3200lbs, mt best mph was 116.8 and I went 92.4 in the 1.8th but the car didn't have enough gear to run the ET it could have I only trapped 5200rpm :( where my Speedbrain showed power into the 6700rpm range.

Not bad for the first outing....it was really cold last night so I know that will effect the tune. and traction.

Good Job there Mike!:nice:

You almost have to expect that first time out. It takes some time to get the car dialed in and learn it. Trying different shift points, different launch RPM's and such. Little by little you will get there.

I would be happy with those results.

Keep us updated.

I have always looked at shifting at the track is liking shifting on the street...no "rust" to it:)

Your car will run better, just give it some time:nice:

I'm sure you got another couple mph in it...

Was this on standard radials? I think you're on the right track with 4:30s and some sticky tires. I'll bet you'll be in the 11s easily with just that change. What was the trap rpm?

Thats on nitto drag radials on my pony wheels. I didn't look @ my trap rpm, but i'm 99.999% sure it was UNDER 6000 rpm! Probably around 5,800 ish. I was playing around with a gear/rpm calculator and I put in 120 for the mph since the 115 mph trap speed is an average of the last 66' I believe. I figure i'm crossing the line around 120 mph or so? If thats the case, then about 5,800 was where I crossed. Wow, I NEED 4.30 gears BAD!

I did datalog my last run and I was running a tad bit too rich. Looks like the colder weather richened me up somehow? It was about a mid 12 a/f across in 4th gear. I usually tune the car in 3rd gear on the street but 3rd gear was a tad bit leaner and more ideal for a/f.

If only we had a local track here on LI I think i'd be a hell of a lot better at this since i'd be able to go much more.

Nice job for the first time out Mike. Ed Curtis should be able to give you a pretty good idea of where the combo will peak so you can pick shift points. I'm just guessing based on the stuff in the sig -- but I'll bet you'll end up shifting a little lower than you are now -- at least the 2-3 and 3-4 shifts. You might have to hold first a little longer so the 'gulf' back to 2nd doesn't make it fall too far off the torque peak. Keep us abreast of how it goes. Move it on down this way and you can race it all winter....

The powerband on the cam sheet is 3200-6400 so obviously I wanna shift a bit past the rpm range. I'm only shifting @ 6,500 now. I remember with my 302 combo with the FTI cam that shifting anything lower than 6000-6200 slowed me down. That cam was 2800-5800. This 347 combo was designed more for mid-high end power, not low rpm power. Between my crappy launching and low 373 rear, thats 2 big problems I need to address.

Stang2841, yes this combo should trap in the 120 range, but as I hope you realize, the success doesn't happen over night. You don't go to the track after a 2 year hiatus (sp?) with a new engine combo and tranny and expect to run the number. I've had a few test passes on the street against a friends car and I will tell you, my car is much quicker on the street than my time slip shows. Its just a matter of learning to launch hard and put the proper gear in the car.

I just hope we get a track here on LI again. Then I can get serious with this! :Damnit:

10.5 psi in an ET Street or ET Drag would definately help you take some of the hit off the launch and get that 60' down. 1 tenth in the 60' is worth about 2.5 to 3 in the 1/4. The 4:30s will keep it pulling in the rpm ranges it's designed for giving you a higher trap speed. My prediction: 11.80s next time out.:nice:

That's awesome Mike. The first times you take a car to the track it is never what it's potential it truly. Stickier tires, steeper gear, maby some suspension as well as more experience, at least a second knocked off that time no doubt. Gives me a lot of confidence.

WOT is the same whether it be track or street. The car doesn't know any different;)

I thought you only shifted at 5,800 at the track and said if you would have shifted at 6,200 you would have ran quicker:shrug: but you never got to try it out. You said (after you got your 306 fixed up) that you could trap 112mph.

I'm sure you can get 118mph if you keep working at it...:nice:
