It was 1 and 1/4Supposed to be torqued ideally within 3/4 turn. Was it only #1 that gave you issues?
How are you checking this ? To measure technically you should be used a solid lifter or a modified Hyd that the plunger won’t collapse.I’ve got the heads torqued down and I sized up my pushrod and rocker assemblies. I’m going to need to find my pedestal shims which are somewhere here in the garage. On cyl #1 TDC, it took 1 1/4 turns from zero lash to cinch up the rocker bolt. That’s too much from what I remember. Should be more like 1/2 to 3/4 from zero lash. Am I right?

1/2 turn to 3/4 preload on the stud mount rockers from zero lash. I’ve found some lifters like a little Less then others.
I gradually tighten the rocker bolt just to the point where there’s no slop in the rocker movement and the pushrod won’t move up and down but you can still just barely rotate it. Thats zero lash. Then I count the number of bolt rotation to cinch the bolt up snug. The first two I checked were 1 full turn and 1 1/4 full turn. That’s a tad too much for my likingHow are you checking this ?
Yes I’m on the base circle of the cam when doing the process. TDC on the compression stroke for the cylinderAre you looking at lifters and getting them both to lowest point before setting zero lash? I assume since you just put the heads on you still have lower intake off.

I’m shimming pedestal rockers. I have stock forged piston in this 302. According to Airflow Research, the AFR 165 Renegade pedestal style heads are the only AFR heads that work with stock pistons.What are you checking ? Pushrod length or just shimming your rockers. I didn’t realize those heads still use pedestal rockers
Shimming your rockers , that ive never had to do I never ran pedestals except on a used engine I had but that didn’t last long.
So I can’t comment it sounded like you were checking pushrod length.
