I cr@pped my pants today. I was idleing in a parking lot and I smelled smoke. Then smoke was seeping from the hood seams. I shut her down popped the hood and this huge plume of smoke escapped. I found 1 power wire that goes to my electric fan had a fuse holder that was melted and vaporized! There was no short....I found a bad (loose) crimp on the 12 gauge wire...so I think that was the problem. I replaced the fuse holder and put good crimps and everything seems good (the wires are not even warm when the fan is running)??? WTF? This setup has been in for 3 months.

This scared me.

What kind of fire extinguisher should I cary?

Where can you get a small car extinguisher?

Also glad to hear it's okay.

Just make sure you get a crome, or anodized (sp) colored one that they sell by the APC stuff and put it on the passenger A-pillar....lol.

I stupidly did something like that by not checking and letting my spark plug wire touch the header while breaking in the cam. There went my MSD 8.5mm wire up in flames. Caused a bit of excitement but nothing else went with it. Good ol fire extinguisher took care of it quick but my engine bay and garage is covered in yellow stuff. Oh well. Learned from my mistake. Glad to hear that everything is all good. I feel your pain.

sorry to hear about that, ID.

at least it was no biggie. Jerry keeps an extinguisher next to the seat (where the lever is to recline the seat, IIRC). looks nice.

take care bud.

they remove the neon tubes, dummy gauges and some stickers. then they can get to the extinguisher and it comes right out.

EDIT: ID, i saw your response to my question about the electro-magnetic fan clutch idea i had (apparently not a real winner. LOL) on a thread a few days ago. for some reason i did not get a chance to post a 'thanks' on that thread, but i meant to thank ya for the insightful answer.
i guess that is why you are an engineer, while i do happen to know that the orange stuff we use to clean grease off of our hands will make your tongue numb.

Mmm.. Numb tongue.

Glad to hear you're safe man. Thanks for posting though, so that we can all learn a little from your experience. Just remember - it could have been much worse. We're glad you and the 'stang are in one piece.

I just bought one not to long ago just in case something like that happens. Have to much money in the car now to watch it go up in flames.
