Doesnt sound like synchros to me if it doesnt grind. If you are trying to put it in first and it doesnt let you and you slowly release the clutch while trying to put it in will it go in? Sounds like either a shift fork issue(tabs on shift fork maybe) or a clutch issue.

Its like a fork missing the middle prong and it is what shifts your synchros from gear to gear. From what I hear, T5 shift forks are prone to bending, lol
Yes there is a set screw on most FWA's (if they are not clickers). I set mine initially, then put a mark at 12 o'clock on the adjuster. That way if the clutch starts to feel funny again, I can see if my adjustment walked or if something is happening with hard parts.
Your idle is good. The reason I asked is because sometimes a really low or really high idle makes getting into first consistantly a little tough.

there is no set screw in mine...should i b concerned??
I think I'm a little behind the curve on this thread as far as a possible diagnosis, but I don't believe anyone has mentioned the possibility of a bad pilot bearing as another reason for hard shifting into first. Do you have any difficulty hitting first without the engine running? That would likely indicate a clutch engagement issue.
I would want some means of locking the adjustment. Some have a set screw, some have a knurled ring that holds the setting, and some are clickers. I dont lock my FWA (because once I do, I cannot get my arms in there to loosen it) and my adjustment walks. I can feel the clutch get 'looser and looser'. I resnug the adjustment when the POE starts heading towards the floor.

and a bent shift fork could cause thost same issues as the pilot bearing (giving u trouble putting it in gear even with the car off) Also wouldn't by now the pilot bearing give some related symptoms such as noise?
ok well i just got my car back, i had a mm cable, fwa, and quad, put on, and also had the fluid changed, it is still NOTCHY going into the gears!!!..this trans is like 3 months old, and it was very smooth when i got it NO NOTCHY gears!!!
the cable is set to about a inch in free play, (the pedal is floppy for like a inch)
