OK this is probably a dumb question, but what is the difference between a fly wheel and a flex plate? Because I hear people call it both.

Flywheels are used on sticks, and flexplates are used on automatics.

Flywheel has teeth on it for the starter to engage.
Flexplate is just a plate that connects crankshaft to torque convertor, like old 6 cyl C-4 set ups or Mopars that have the starter engaging teeth on the convertor.

I think!

Flex plate also has the teeth for the starter to engage. The teeth are not on the TC.

The flywheels hurt more when they land on you under the car as they are a lot heavier.
