For Handling Sake...9 or 10.5 in the back

I am trying to decided on what size 03 cobra rim to get in the back. I want bigger but will it make my car handle like ****...please give a guy some input

10inch rims with 295's... and 9 inch rims with 265's

but then i noticed you said for handling and that i dont know... but 295's do look good out back and not much bigger than 265s...

I am gonna buy 03 cobra rims.....but i want to handle, not grip on the track so i was wondering which is better to road race with?

i would say the 10.5s for the most grip but i dont road race though.

Go as big as possible without over tireing the wheel, by this I mean, say you chose the 10.5" and to match a tire to it you want to find a size and it's recommended rim width size. Say it's a XXX size tire and it fits a 10" to an 11.5" rim width. You want to go with a rim with a width that is an 1/2" wider than minimum recommended or even the minimium for best overall handling. The biggest thing for handling is not to have side wall flex, so if you run a tire on the minimum side of the recommend rim width size you are able to run more tire pressure and therefore have less sidewall flex. If you over tire the rim and run the recommened tire pressure it will buldge the middle of the tire and the edges will not have a proper contact patch with the road.

I will tell you if your tires are much bigger than 245 on the front, you will have serious road tracking issues at highway speeds.

I think the 9" wheel will fit best on your rear, I had the afs chrome 10.5" rear cobra wheels on my 03 cobra and the nitto 315 was way to small for the rim, nitto dr's run small, and the bfg 315 fit nice, but I know that is too wide of a tire on a gt because I have them on my 10" saleen wheels and the sidewall is chewed up. I would think being able to rotate the tires would be a good option as well

i ran 275's at all 4 for @5 yrs and it greatly enhanced handling/turning compared to the 245's. Now i'm staggered with 255 front 285 back and it still handles great but tracks differently on the highway in truck ruts.

i got 275 on 17x9 bullits on the rear and 245 on the 17x8 in front and it handles nice but i need the suspension done before i can really get into it

Yeah. The lines in the road that run parallel to your car. When you ride on them with a very wide front tire, they tend to make the car steer where the lines (indentations/cracks/etc.) are as opposed to where you want to be. It's like having your passenger grab your steering wheel every so often. Annoying as hell.

I don't think it would hurt handling to run a bigger tire for the rear. The high end sport cars like Porsche, Ferarri, Dodge Viper, Chevy Corvette run wider wheels in the rear.

i have been handling biased for years and my mustang is no different. i am running stock up front and 315's in the rear. as far as tracking, thats why i stayed stock in the front, i didnt want to get front wheels if they matched my new rears good, plus i didnt want to go wider in the front because a friend of mine has an 02 trans am and complains about the tracking with his 275s. i know i hate how much mine has always tracked, and dont want more than i can get away with

ok, with the 315s i this is what i notice:

1. they ride like stock
2. the rears dont pull at all compared to the stock size
3. they grip as much as i need. granted, i can still break them loose and get snap oversteer if i want to
4. in corners i now can tell that my front tires give up before my big rear meats. which means....
5. i now NEED to get the tracking monster 275s for the front so it doesnt understeer so much

running anything wider than a 295(or even 275) is not going to help on a low powered mustang, especially on a stock 4 link style rear end.
* its all about the person behind the steering wheel..
