for those that repainted their car and moldings

so i'm in the process of repainting my car and i took off one side of molding. It was a pain in the butt. I want to change my car from blue to silver and was wondering what you guys did.

Did you spray the Molding seperate or did you leave it on the car and just spray over it?

I just want it to look right. I can't buy new molding now so i'm going to use the old ones.

Just use house paint and a 12" roller, brushes work best for the smaller areas.

No but really, take the molding off and paint the car, then paint the molding and put them on. No sense cutting corners you will just regret it later.

I agree with the removal. If you have a convertible be prepared for some work. Just did my 86 vert and there's ALOT of trim pieces. And not the easiest to remove. If your car is old be real careful when removing. The plastic becomes very brittle. Not only do the pieces break, but worse yet are the attachment clips and studs. Get a manual so you know how they attach. Some clip. Some bolt. Some use double back tape. Prep with a minimum of 400 wet dry, and use sandable primer. The new paint will show every imperfection. Don't expect to do it on a weekend.

Remove the mouldings if for no other reason than just making the color sanding easier

i'm wondering if its worth painting all the black trim near the top and around the trunk and windows. right not they are kinda faded and funky. was thinking of just cleaning them up and keeping them black.

how do you take off window belt molding? i got the manual but figure i'd ask you since you sound like you did it.

there is a screw on the end of the door that holds on the belt moldings then they should come right out.

Remove the screw, then slide them back, then lift up, be careful when removing there are plastic pieces that hold them in that can break easily!

I candy... you haven't stated if you're car is a convertible. the trim pieces are quite different than a coupe. IDK but the year probably will make a difference. as stated above there was no screw on my 86 vert. it just clipped on to the door and is part of the weatherstripping.

yeah this is for a vert. in the door jam i found a screw un did that but it still didn't slide out. I saw that there is some rust under the middle part of the belt molding. i'll try and take the panel off to get a better look.

Theres only one screw then they slide out maybe about 2 or three inches then you can take them off.some older cars you will need to slide the all the way..
