For those who have removed their quad shocks (i.e. taken off for larger tires, etc), how do you control the rear axle without them installed?

When i got my 87 they had already removed the quads in order to put 10.5 cobras on there. They put a set of lakewood traction bars and koni yellow shocks on to "compensate" i guess. It works , hooks good , If you don't mind the annoying sound of the traction bars hitting the florrpan all the time and causing the car to jerk a bit.

My next mods are going to be torque box reinforcing and some upper and lower control arms.

Interesting. It sounds like just a quality set of upper and lower control arms seem to work out. I just picked up a Turbo Coupe rear that I am looking at installing without the quad shocks on it.

I removed my quads also and i still have the stock control arms. I'm also running slicks and spraying it out of the hole and i've had no problems.

technically yes, but ford called the horizontally mounted shocks that are in back of the axle quadra-shocks, and they're commonly called quadshocks on these boards
