Ford Racing Boss 347 Crate

Dennis, I didn't see it myself; but my son-in-law's '94 Cobra did just that.
However he's thinking it might have started with a rod; and of course he had been pushing it pretty hard on the strips (down in your neighborhood as well as "back home in Iowa") before it gave up on the drive home from work one day. But the main webs were pretty much litte nuggets of iron when he pulled it apart.

But his current 347 still has a 2-bolt block.......

The specs,TQ/HP ratings, compression etc on this FRPP crate engine are identical (including Z heads) to the FRPP 347 crate I purchased 2 years ago.
Maybe the same engine?
The price then was just under $7,000.
I have been very pleased with the engine.
With a conservative tune it was right on the money for the TQ and HP ratings.
It is very streetable and provides excellent performance:nice:

pretty much the same but probably with a different block, ford racing has had all kinds of 302 blocks over the years. yours probably has the sportsman block

I had a few thoughts, but take them for what they're worth 'cause I'm no expert.

Out of ALL the Shelby's, Cobra's and HiPo Mustangs out there, how many have ever had the crank come flying out of them because they only had 2 bolt main blocks?

Also, I know you wanted to keep it all "Ford", but have you considered having something custom built for your car? Check out some of these engines at:

That guy could probably build you something much nicer than an off the shelf engine. If I could afford one, or if my old beater would handle it, I'd love to have one. It isn't in my near future though. I just scraped some cash together to swap out my carb.

Not saying a Factory Ford engine isn't any good, I just admire something that is one of a kind, and hand built by one true pro like that guy is all. I'm sure there are other great engine guys out there too, but I like this guy's site. he has lots of great tech info on there that I like to read.

Have a good one!

Whoops - sorry 'bout that! I mangled your name even worse than I mangled bnickle's name the first time.

Anyway, you're dead-on right; 2-bolts, 4-bolts. It just doesn't matter; when something decides to let go, those extra cap bolts are going to bend/shear right along with the first two. AJ went with a '71 block for his present 347; Hanlon Motorsports in Iowa did the intitial build while he was playing in The Sandbox for 15 months. Since this past April, he's been doing the rest; more porting, polishing, datalogging, tuning...... Now he's backing off on the "Strip Cobra"; bought a $700 '94 sixer, which is getting a carb'd stroker Windsor and C4 strictly for the track. The white Snake will just be a street car/family cruiser - baby seat and all! :rlaugh:

As a teenager, I thought I had the cat's a$$ when I found out my Gran Torino rolled off the line with a 4-bolt Cleve block from some dusty shelf in the back corner of a Dearborn warehouse. Yeah, a lot of 351C research later, I know better. My present Cougar's 2-bolt block will work just fine with the same stuff my Grannie had..... and maybe a little bit more.

The new Boss block is WAAAY stronger than a 69 or 70 block. I'm sure no one is going to say otherwise. It also has oiling improvements, can run factory roller cam lifters (I would try very hard to avoid running flat tappets on a high lift cam with modern oil), can run a larger over bore for better breathing, etc.

There's a link to some info. I'm not going to type it all out. I'm sure that when D.Hearne said it's nothing like the '69-'70 block, he meant this.

The middle engine in the top row of that gallery is the engine in my avatar - and in my fastback!

Aaron also builds more "standard" crate style engines but with personal attention to the small things. The only problem is you may have to wait longer for your engine than an off the shelf FFRP product.
