found a 1969 couger 9" axle, should I buy it for my 68?

its completly stock, and the guy wants $150 for it. I plan on tearing it down and adding 4.11's locker/posi, and maybe axleshafts. I was curious if this is a good axle to use, or if I should hold out for something better? I like it because the housing is the same length as the 8" in my 68. Anybody know what type of bearings it has, or the spline count on the axles?

it's identical to a 67-70 mustang 9". 28 spline axles same bearings

so it would be the small bearing axle then correct? Is it possible to put in 31 spline axleshafts? Should I buy this thing or pass it up?

yeah it's the small bearing but you can get 31 spline axles for it. it's the same housing the 31 spline drag pack cars had as well. 150 sounds like a decent price to me. i'd say go for it. unless you can find a bare versailles housing you won't find another 9" that will fit and have the big bearing ends. so the mustang-cougar 9" is you're best bet.

So all you'll end up using is the housing? I guess if you think you'll never get bigger than 31 spline, you'll be fine.

yeah if you want to use 35 spline axles or something you'll have to change ends.

It's a good deal for $150. I'm sure you could make some money on it if you wanted. I think the hole where the spring pin goes in is a little bit bigger than a Mustang. That shouldn't be too hard to take care of though.

i have a line on a lincoln versailles axle also, which is the better alternative?

how much would 31 spline axles be able to handle?

well the versailles housing is the stronger unit but you have relly abuse even the stock mustang/cougar 9" to break or twist it. 31 spline can live behind 800-1000 hp if you treat them right. that's what they used in super stock drag cars in the 60's 70's and even into the 80's.

i'd say you should get whichever one is cheaper or if the versailles rear still has the discs and you want rear disc brakes then go with the versailles. either one should be fine for your car even with 28 spline axles.

if you decide you want to put more than 450hp to the ground and run slicks then the 31 spline axles are a no brainer

Got a 1970 unit for mine two years ago for $125, still haven't installed it yet though.
