I never got why ford didn't market this car over here. Fear of it stealing sales from the mustang?

I think you are right, it probably would have. Like the Mustang, Cosworths were affordable when new (well, not here in Norway but thats a different story), and they have tons of performance potential for very little money.
And you get the choice between 2WD or 4WD, Sierras or Escorts, all with a bundle of aftermarket parts to choose from.

But as for me, I much prefer the Mustang with its V8... and here is a vid clip from last Saturday's Ford Performance Club of Norway's summer meet showing why:
