I have found a leak in my cooling system. passemger side cylinder head rear freeze plug has small rust hole in it. Has anyone ever replaced this one with the head still in the car, if so any help would be great.
Trickflow makes a great replacement for the heads.
But seriously, what transmission do you have? When I had my AODE out, you could get to it easily. A T5 would be easier to remove than an AODE or an engine. But you might be able to get to it with just the hood off.
The bad one shouldnt be to hard to get out but how do I get the new one in? Not alot of room in there. Hoping to do this without taking the tranny out( t-5). Planning afr's in the future but spent all my money on the car and getting her back on the road. Think I gotta good deal though. I will have some pics soon. .
You COULD try the tried and true JB Weld repair. I would try it, in a second. It may get you through long enough to get another set of heads to put on there.
Anyone else have an idea? It will be at least a year before I can put new heads on, jb weld sounds good, but I dont want to be across town when it decides to let go and blow coolant everywhere. Need to fix this one soon.
Thanks for all the help and advice everyone, but I just got the quick fix from my friend at ford. Napa sells an expandable freeze plug for this situation. Simple as popping the old one out pushing the new one in and turning the expansion bolt. piece of cake( yea right)
Ah yes I've seen those expandable ones before, that should do the trick at least for a year. As for taking the old one out, most guys just pierce a hole through the center (should be easy in your case) and pry it out using a screwdriver. Hopefully you have clearance to do this.
Are you still running cats? If so I'd keep the smog stuff, apparently not feeding air to the cats makes them clog alot faster somehow. If you're running an o/r mid-pipe, then feel free to ditch the system, but I think you're supposed to plug the thermactor holes in the back of the heads when you do that, I'm not sure though.
Holy *****, I would not wish this horror on anyone, after four busted knuckles and a gash on the back of my hand, I finally had to go buy a dremel and cut the damn thing out.
On another note, removing smog pump and accesories sure makes changing the pass side plugs alot easier.
No but seriously...I think jb would hold for something like that.
Or you could try some repair putty from autozone. I think it was called "plastic repair" but it works for metal and other stuff too. I fixed a hole in my windshield washer reservoir with it. However there is more pressure and temp here so you may have to check into that.
