Only way to know for sure is to check out the ECU. Just yank the kick panel off (after removing the screws of course).

You have to keep in mind you did not buy a brand new car, It's been through a lot and...well, honestly it is up to you to do your homework prior to buying it, if you know what I mean. I have had several cars that make me scratch my head wondering why this or that was done but in the end I knew what I was getting myself into prior to buying it.

I hear ya. I have become a bit anal when I go to buy a used car now as a few years ago I grabbed a 88 GTA that I thought was at a steal of a price with out thoroughly checking the car out and what a mistake that was.

Rear end was leaking a hair so I got a new gasket and started removing the cover, easy fix I thought...heh was I wrong, when removing the bolts I found the po had actually snapped 3 of them and literally gobbed rtv on the heads and just stuck them back on.

Engine was swapped to a carbed 350, but the wiring harness was intact so swapping back to tuned port wasn't going to be that bad...yeah, you guessed it, harness was cut at the computer for some unknown reason. On top if that the block and heads came off a 73 pickup if I recall correctly and they were about the worse combination gm ever used was something like 114hp.

When I went to look at the car it had just rained and the car was parked in the grass, and was just recently ran...reason for that was to cover the massive oil leak from the rear main, I looked under the car but everything was wet from the rain. so once I got it home, in the garage I had an immediate project to deal with.

Point of all this is now I check the car bumper to bumper and make a mental note of what I am getting into and decide before hand if it's worth it to me, knowing that with older cars it's gonna normally have some issues but it's a question if I want to deal with them, most of the time it's not to bad as people are generally honest and I know I am not buying a off the showroom floor car. Every thing the po did wrong becomes your issues.

indeed...such as chopping the wires to alot of crap to install a tach...chopping the wires to the top that runs the motor..???which i dont get at all...dropping that engine in and not disclosing that or where it came from. So yeah I will live and learn thru this one. I am just trying to figure out exactly what i have so that I know where to start to get it up to par. or if it is a lost cause all together

Honestly...it makes sense. He didn't hack it.

1988 Mustangs are compatible in terms of wiring with only 1987-1989 Mustangs. For a 4-banger, the body harness is the same, but the engine harness is not. So that means he needed to change the engine harness.

The only compatible years of engine harness would be 1987, 1988 and 1989. Now, only 1 year was mass air, 1989 (unless you get an 1988 CA car) so odds are a speed density 1987-1988 engine harness was more readily available since 1989 harness go for BIG $$$ since they are the only factory OEM harness for Mass Air that swaps into an 1986-1988 speed density Mustang.

So, i bet you have an 87-88 engine harness, a speed density computer and an engine that coule come from any 87-93 Mustang.

Again, not necessarily a poor hack job...but the logical thing the original owner may have done.

Ok I finally got the push pen to release so that I could get to the computer. Numbers are: EEC IV SFI-SD1 E7SF-12A650-E1A DE..... From what I can tell that is a speed density 87 auto computer for a 5.0.

The car is a 5 speed. So wondering now if PO converted it to a 5 speed or if it was one already and just changed the computer when changing the engine? Now where would I find numbers on the engine harness to figure out what that came out of?
