I ran a carfax on an 87 lx 5.0 and on an 89 GT. Both came back with inconsistent odometer readings. I don't plan on buying any of those cars but can you really roll the miles back on these clusters? Thanks

not without taking the odometer out and putting the gears where you want it.
What do you mean by inconsistent? Note that we dont have the 6th digit so you could never get a clean run on the mileage anyway. Is it 20,000, 120,000, 220,000? How do you know for sure. Carfax cant really help you with the mileage.

mine has that "inconsistant mileage" thing too because a previous owner told them the wrong mileage by only a couple hunded miles, and then the car was purchased with like a hunded miles less than was stated, so no big deal

how much does mileage matter anyway?

I mean, i dont know about you guys, but I dont put a lot of stock into mileage at all.
Im sure some of you may remember not long ago i posted in talk about my girlfriends Sable blowing a head gasket at under 80K miles. A shining example of terribly poor maintenance destroying a car that could have lasted a long time.
Then there are cars like my mustang (230,000+) my dads 99 escort with already over 220,000 miles, his last honda at 300,000 miles and my moms old camaro 280,000 and still runs fine.
Further wondering where mileage matters, especially in a fox, is how modified the cars get. I mean, how many people have heard, engine with x miles and tranny with y miles?
Does carfax even give a mileage report without the 6th digit in the odometer?

right....every car has a story
alot of times the whole instrument panel will be changed from one vehicle to another. i would like to have an extra instrument panel from a parts car not for mileage reduction but just in case the speedometer or tach. ect goes out.in this case alot of times it is cheaper to replace the whole instrument panel with a used one then to replace guages....

Yeah i don't put much stock in mileage. My 86 has only 60K orginal miles on it, but if you were to look at it you'd think 160K. It's just 20 years old and sat at my buddy's house under a cover for 5 years before I bought it, so it needs some lovin.
