I had a great time hooning around with a friend of mine with Arizona Motorsports Park track pretty much to ourselves at a PCA event last saturday. He's a competitive racer in NASA's TTC class, I'm just a longtime HPDE guy.

Two very different Mustangs, very evenly matched.

My car is a '92 LX with a full interior that compensates for a narrow track and puny 235-width R-comp tires this time with a torque arm, panhard bar, K-member, front coilovers, and Cobra brakes.

His car is a '99 GT whose wider track and much wider 275-width R-comps are saddled with a stock K-member, stock rear suspension, and GT brakes.

My car: 3450 lbs wet with me in it, 275 RWHP/298 RWTQ on a portable dynojet
His car: 3450 lbs wet with him in it, 290/290 on the same or similar dynojet, in this case of these videos, carrying a fairly small passenger

My best time so far that day, simply could not do any better, was a 1:57.2. I wasn't running my timer this session but looking at the videos, it looks like we motivated each other well into the 1:55's. I guess a little competition helps LOL

It may not look/sound like it but we're whipping these things for all they're worth.

My video (sorry for the :poo:ty sound on my ching-chong Go-Pro knockoff):

Very cool! It looks like you guys had some nice runs. Videos never do capture the feeling. I could feel like I'm pulling a g and the video makes it seem like I'm driving miss Daisy.

What tires are you running? I'm looking to start doing HPDE events with my 88 next year whenever time allows.

I was running Maxxis RC1's, which have a reputation for good grip and for wearing like iron. Unfortunately I'm running them in 235 width in a failed experiment. I was actually faster on 255/40-17 Hankook RS3 street tires, which are just about the best bang for the buck in the current tire kingdom. Problem is I still run 8-inch wheels so sizes are a little limited.

LOl. Driving gloves, T-shirt and shorts. Must not be any regulations on safety apparel. I ran an open track event at PIR and it was required to have a jacket, full length cotton jeans/pants, gloves and obviously helmet. And this was not a timed event. You got a 20 min run session and passing was allowed only on the front straight. That was back in 2001 and I was driving my then new 01' Bullitt Mustang with a whopping 300 miles on the clock. All stock.

Thanks for the info. I'll be running 8 inch wheels as well so I'll have the same width limitations.

Man that looks like a good time! I regret not doing stuff like that with my Fox when I had it. SSBC has some really nice brake kits. I was never disappointed with the stopping power.

@MFE92

What brake setup are you running?

I'm sure you've said before and that thread laying around somewhere... but "Oh hell yeah" on the cookie cutters.

These days I'm running a straight SN95 Cobra setup front and rear with Raybestos ST47 pads up front (closest thing to magic that exists for brake pads) and Hawk HPS pads in the rear.

Read the title and thought it was a showdown between an old Fox and a new Ford Edge SUV... kind of would have liked to see that! :D

I used to do track days in a modified '06 Charger V-6, AWD. Upgraded suspension, brake pads, brake fluid, tires, intake, exhaust and tune.
My best time at Mid Ohio was just under 2 minutes, which was my personal goal with it. :)
Best Day Ever in that car was a track rental at NJMP on Thunderbolt in the rain! My AWD really proved it's mettle that day, all the modified RWD cars had to tip-toe through the corners, while I was exiting at the top of 2nd with my foot on the floor. I was passing people I had no business passing, and loved it!

Have fun and stay (moderately) safe! :nice:

What top speed are you getting to with HDPE and in this video? This looks like fun. I did several mods to my car lately (cobra IRS, 04' cobra front brakes, etc) to hopefully do some autox and road coarse open track days soon.
