Free mod, lowering your clutch pedal and grab point

Ever since my friend bought his Cobra, I LOVED the way his clutch felt. It truely was awesome ! Pedal was even with the brake one and it grabbed about an inch from the floor. Easing out the clutch is SO easier when you don't have to lift your whole foot off the floor, getting your knee stuck between the steering wheel and the door in the process. I thought my friend, thanks to the previous owner, had all the adjustable goodies (read clutch quadrant, firewall adjuster and pedal height adjuster) and I didn't have the money to duplicate his setup. That's the only reason why I hadn't eliminated this damn truck clutch feeling until yesterday

After looking at a few clutch pedal height adjusters, I realized how easy it would be to make my own. At first, I thought... "Well, since my clutch only grabs in the last 2-3 inches of pedal travel, it will slip badly or won't grab at all if I lower it 2 inches (what's needed to make it even with the brake pedal). I thought I still needed a firewall adjuster. Talked a little to my father who crawled under the dash to take a look at the auto adjusting mechanism (ratcheting quadrant). Conclusion: grab point is determined from the "at rest" position of the pedal. I could lower it safely and, best of all, for free If your clutch is like mine, here's the way to correct it.

Simply put, you remove your clutch pedal (one nut and a push pin), bend it and reinstall it. Takes about an hour if everything goes well... that's where you'll benefit from my experience There's a switch that lets you start the engine only when the clutch is depressed. If you simply bend the pedal, it will hit the bumper on the floor a little sooner, the switch won't be activated and you won't be able to start your car. Learned the hard way . That's why you must bend the pedal at two locations. The following drawings were correctly scaled but the damn scanner messed them up, angles aren't exact either. Anyway, you get the idea

WARNING: Performing this mod sets your pedal at a fixed position, as opposed to an aftermarket adjuster. Lowering it too much could prevent it from disengaging. Do not set the "at rest" position lower than the brake pedal (try it before welding. If your clutch already grabs close to the floor, this mod isn't for you. If you don't feel comfortable with this mod, simply buy a clutch pedal height adjusters, they're worth about $20.
