She's toast! Trashed!

Coming back from San Antonio this weekend, and coming through the north side of Austin the battery light started coming on and off. Everytime it came on, my volt gauge would spike, and the headlights would get real bright. Well I still had like 70 miles to go. So by the time I got home and to work the next morning, she had fried good. I took it apart last night and it turns out my voltage regulator literally came apart, the two little magnets had popped out and were just chilling inside loose. It kept overcharging and screwed it all up. So much for that one! (last time I buy an eBay alternator )

JT, no I didn't even bother with contacting the seller. It's supposed to rain thursday and I need the mustang back by then. I ordered a Motorcraft through the dealership this morning and got a good deal, with a warranty. It came in this afternoon (great thing about working at a dealership, get parts fast!) and put it on tonight. She's operational again! I'm gonna maybe get my old one rebuilt (there's a place down in Austin that does it).

Jinx, yep, 3rd alternator. 4th voltage regulator!

Sheesh Chris, that sucks. You could get some rebuild kits and open up an alternator store.

You cant go wrong with the unit you got - I would do the same if I had hook ups too!

And we thank you for posting - you know I had that guy in the back of my mind for next time.

BTW, real riders ride in the rain. J/K - I had to say that - you know it's a joke with guys.

I used to ride in the monsoons and it was NOTHING I wanted to do again. I once had to let a bike sit in a parking lot for several hours to dry off (something got wet and I didnt have tools to strip it down to inspect it). I sat on the curb.

JT, if I could make money off all the parts I've broken on the stang, I'd be a rich guy!

I'll ride in the rain, that doesn't bother me. (the first time I rode the Gixxer in the rain was also the first time I rode 2up, so it's not that big of a deal) The only problem is I live down a dirt road, and so when it rains, my road turns to mud, and that's motorcycle suicide!

Chris, wait till monsoons (you get those, right? That damp air from South of the Border has to make its way up your way). Nothin like it (not meant in a great way).

I hear ya about broken car parts. Me too.

Has anyone bought that alternator from Parts America thats remanufacterd? I need a new alternator and am searching for the best deal. Parts America has two alternators that come up....an OE one and Autolite, which would you recommend? They both go for about $110 with a $45 core charge.

How about alterstart? I found a BRAND NEW 3G 135A Alternator for $139.00 with no requirment for a core.

I got a remanufacterd Autolite Alternator with the big pulley on it. I went to take the pulley off to replace it with the smaller ASP that I have and couldn't pull off the pulley once I removed the bolt. Do the remanufacters affix the pulley to the alternator shaft with some sort of adhesive? I put a screwdriver between the pulley and the alternator housing and tried to pry it loose but didn't wanna push it to far and break or bend something. Do I need a puller to get it off? The pulley off my old alternator came right off.
