Front whl brngs...need help asap...pleeeze!

Hey kids, so I'm installing new brake pads and I discover that the left front wheel bearing(s) is bad (noisy), take off grease cover and it's DRY!

Now for the ignorant part...is there a keeper over the nut? Do you just crank on the whole assembly to loosen? This thing is either locked on somehow or very tight.

Called sealed bearings.............

on those wheel bearings ie 94 and newer they are torqued to something like 200 foot pounds i went thru the same thing i took mine to the dealership after i bought the wheel bearing hub assembly it cost 75 dollars at the dealership for my 94 you can talk to a tech at a dealership and get a impact and i think a 32 or 33mm socket but it is better to have someone do it because of the high torque setting unless you have steel worker friends with the big wrenches good luck

slight interjection here, i am replacing my stock 99 gt front brakes with cobra calipers, rotors, ss lines, flush, etc. is it a good idea to replace the front wheel bearings while i'm in there? how much more is involved doing this? also replacing the rear pads as well with a flush, would replacing the rear bearings be a good idea and not take to much further time?

I have @ 87,xxx miles on my car and want it to stay in top shape, not to mention i saw a thread on corner carvers where i guy had a wheel bearing/s failure. ( all i do is daily drive and AutoX, no dragstrip). Thanks in advance, the Cobra guys usually know quite a bit more than the younger crowd with the GT's, etc.

Do the front wheel bearings now. Perfect time. Rear axle bearings rarely go out with a catastrophic failure of any kind...usually shows itself as a whining/growling noise at the bearing first. The axles must be removed and the bearings pressed on\off at the rear.

thanks for the prompt reply Tygr. I am pretty sure they are of negligible cost (i saw the rears at autozone on their computer for 8 bucks). Does autozone sell timken (sp*) front bearings? if not what are some highly reliable/performance front bearings to get? Do i need to buy anything else for the install such as grease, bearing gaskets/seals, special tools needed?

once the rotors/calipers come off, what steps are next? i did quick search but yielded nothing in black and white as far as step by step.

thanks for any/all information you can shed on this subject.

The hubs on SN95 cars are sealed. You can't service them. You can get the hubs from Ford (koyo's, national bearings) or the timken's from NAPA and autozone. Pay from $60-75.

Take the old hub off and throw it away. Install the new hub. They are pre-greased and ready to install (you'll see the bolts to remove when you open the box with the new hub).

Fronts are good for at least 100K, rears for almost 200K (unless you road race 'em).

He's right. Get the right sized socket FIRST. It must fit the retaining nut and keeper assembly to remove! Pull off the rotors and drop them (studs down) on the concrete and the hubs will break free and you are good to go. I got Koyo bearings (made in USA) and the old bearings I removed turned out to be Koyo also (factory) at 107,000 miles...one was bad.
