ok, my wife's mufflers have been sitting in the garage ever since we bought the car, which was over a month ago. i have been too lazy and tired to fool with them myself. now, i plan to install them this weekend. i need to know any tricks of the task for this. i have never installed mufflers before, it looks like a straight bolt on application, but the new mufflers have hangers on them that, one is reversed and one is regular direction. anybody have a good way to remove the old mufflers and put these on? i.e. which hanger goes in first? also, how do i get the old mufflers off without beating the crap out of them?

Unbolt the hangers and pull out the muffler and hangers all at once. Then transfer the hangers to the new mufflers. It's pretty easy. Biggest problem I had was getting the clamps tight enough on the new mufflers.

I got the Flowmaster axle backs and it came with replacement clamps...don't know about others. The only problem with installing the Flows was that the muffler itself is much longer than the stocker and really put space at a premium when it came to getting the bolt back in and tightened that holds the rear hanger bracket to the car. Install time was only about 45 minutes. The higher you can get the rear of the car off the ground the better it is for sure!!! Good luck McQueen.

that's my problem, my wife's car is lowered now and i can't get my floor jack under it, well i can, but the handle is so short it won't raise it up any. i guess i could use the twisty jack that came with the car and do one side at a time.

i installed mufflers with the car on the ground, with stock ride height. drive the car onto a few stacked boards or ramps, and you should be able to finish the install.

Great idea Big on the boards to get added leverage then jack.
I was looking at your "garage" Big and was wondering what you thought of your O/R H pipe with the Flows? Did you install both at the same time or was the H done later?

the H was done later. i had to go back and re-adjust my mufflers after the H was installed. when you change out the mid pipe, it throws the muffler alignment off a little.

the H really woke up the flows. the flows are too quiet with the stock H. IMO, i dont have MY perfect exhaust setup, but i dont know if i will ever find the perfect sound with a S197. i like the combo i have now, but it does have the O/R "trumpets" where it sounds a little goofy at a certain rpm.

would i do it again? yes.

No, the Borlas come with clamps.

exhaust gets a louder, wierd tone. dont know exactly how to describe it. i do remember seeing a video about trumpets recently. maybe a search on one of the video hosting sites will bring it up.

all axle backs come with new clamps. reason being the stock ones are spot welded on. the only way to do this muffler swap is to remove them with the hangers still on. then you simply put the hangers on the new muffler exactly the way they came off. do one muffler at a time. the bolts on the very rear of the mufflers are a real pita. but unless ur a total hack this job shouldnt take more then an hour. a lift makes it a lot easier. use an impact gun to tighten down the new clamps. dont be afraid to gun em on. u need them nice and tight.

mine didn't come with clamps, i got them off ebay, so i don't know what happened. they are new, so they should have been there. anyway, i got them on though, with some of those cheap muffler clamps from parts store, not happy with it, but it will work for now. i am actually going to have them welded on, and also have the hangers on the mufflers cut and rewelded too, the mufflers don't lign up good to the cutout in the bumper, so i will pay the extra money to get everything welded up nicely. thanks

dont weld them!! that would be a huge mess to try and take them off later. even the fuel tank would be a mes. you have to remove the over the axle pipe for more than you might think. with adjustment, the mufflers should fit the opening. you may have to loosent the connection to the H pipe, so you can get them perfect.
