Fuel and tranny help

OK guys, I have a 90 LX 5.0 , see sig. For about 2 days now I have been smelling gas and I just looked under the hood and I have a few small puddles of gas on my lower intake. I am guess it is coming from one or more injectors. My question is, where would these leak from? A bad o-ring maybe? I have noticed for the past few days it is harder to start (takes about 2-3 seconds to where it normally fires right as I hit the key) that is what made me look under the hood for it and not at the tank as I was loosing pressure in my lines and making it harder to start.

Second problem, when I am in 4th and 5th gear and I hit the gas the rpm's raise real fast and it is not picking up much speed at all, kinda like pushing in the clutch about 1/2 to 3/4 and hitting the gas. 5th gear is worse than 4th but they both do it. 5th I have to feather the gas, no quick movements can be made or it acts up. At first I thought maybe it was my clutch but if it was wouldn't it do it in all 5 gears and not just 2? Thank you to anyone who can help.

your puddles of gas on the intake definitely sounds like an injector is leaking! could be a bad o-ring! if it is it's an easy fix !by new o-ring pop out injector take off old ring put on new one put it back in! there's a little more to it than that but I'm assuming you know how to do it! if not just ask and I'm sure one of us can walk you through it! as for your other problem is not exactly sure what it could be! if your injector is leaking when you mash the gas you might not be getting gas to that cylinder !!!!

I have never had to change injectors before. Owned 9 Mustangs total and about half were efi 5.0's and never had to do it. I am sure I could figure it out. Just pull the upper plenum and change them? Do I need to remove my fuel rails to do this? Any tips would be helpfull. Thanks bro.

yes you have to remove the fuel rails to take them out undo the bolts that hold the fuel rails down and then pull up on it slowly start at one end and work your way around pulling them either out of the rail or the intake! swap out the o-rings for the new ones and put it all back together! and your good to go!!

Sounds esay enough. About how much does a set of these run? If they aren't too much I may just go ahead and buy a set and replace them all and see what it does from there. I hate just throwing parts at something not knowing what is wrong but if it's something real cheap and a good chance of being the problem I will do it. I don't feel too comfy having a leaky injector with an electrical plug running to it to top it off. Know what I mean!

i wouldn't worry about the electrical running to it! id worry about the hot motor and headers!! as for the price if your talking o-rings only 8 of them shouldn't run you to much! I'm not sure the price but i mean there only little rubber o-rings my guess is they shouldn't cost anymore than 15$ for 8? but I'm not sure! as for throwing money at it these are only suggestions! we cant really tell you whats wrong if we cant see it or look at it ! were only going by what you tell us here! kinda hard to diagnose without being there!! but with all the knowledge in here most of the time we can nail it!!!

The o-rings are what I actually thought first too. That or leaking from the where the fuel rail connects to the injector. Is there an o-ring on the top too?

good deal ! i wasnt sure how much they cost ive never bought them before! ive bought new injectors 48lbs but all new injectors come with the o-rings! but i didnt think they would cost to much! let me know if that solves your problem! if not we'll try again! ! let me know what happens!

sounds good, will do. Now I gotta find a socket that will fit the bolts on my TrickFlow intake! Looks like a wierd one to me.

I replaced my fuel rails a few weeks ago and put in new o-rings while I was at it. I found them at Car Quest. It was 4 or 5 bucks for 8 of them. They are just your average o-rings, probably could use some that you find at the hardware store as well. Just need to be able to stand a little bit of heat.

Also, I had a leaking "quick disconnect" which may be one of your problems. Although with a puddle on the intake, probably not. It did give me the excuse to replace all of those crappy connections with screw on ones though!

Well I picked them up a little while ago. Still need to go buy a socket that will fit the intake. Oreilly's didn't carry one?! Plus, when I called the lady looked them up and said $3.49 for a kit of 16. I figured top and bottoom oring for each of the 8. Well I get there and they were $3.49 for a set of 4, so I ended up paying alot more than quoted.

as for the other problem, that's a bad clutch.

Do a clutch job and you should be as good as new.

Fuel injector seal kits with 2 O rings and a pintle cap (Borg-Warner P/N 274081) are available at Pep Boys auto parts. Cost is about $2.74 per kit.. The following are listed at the Borg-Warner site ( http://www.borg-warner.com ) as being resellers of Borg-Warner parts:

Use motor oil on the O rings when you re-assemble them & everything will slide into place. The gasoline will wash away any excess oil that gets in the wrong places and it will burn up in the combustion chamber.

The pintle caps fit either injectors with a pin sticking out the injector end or 4 with more tiny holes in the injector end
The pintle caps hold the O ring in place and keep it from sliding off and into the manifold. If the correct pintle caps are used, they do not have any effect on the injector spray pattern.


Heating the pintle caps in boiling water makes it much easier to install them.

Thanks guys. Got he parts and will work on it tomorrow. As for the clutch problem, wouldn't that effect all the gears and not just 4th and 5th? I could be wrong as I thought that at first too but then figured it would slip in all 5 gears. Thanks again.

as for your clutch problem! i didn't pay much attention to it at first ! but you might want to check your clutch cable when it goes into the trans! i have long tubes on mine and it melted the plastic coating on it and caused the wire inside to bind up and not allow it to engage or disengage properly! just a thought and cheaper than a clutch! it worked for me! check it out! just a suggestion!

the only way the cable could effect it, is if it was SUPER SUPER tight, causing partial disengagement all the time. Possible, but HIGHLY unlikely.

When a clutch goes out, you always notice it in a higher gear first, like 5th, hence your issue.
