I think I have found some 8 or 12 gal fuel cells at Summit and Jegs that fit the spare tire well. I have not done this yet, but plan to. I will probably make a cardboard template or mock up of the cell size to check fit before I buy it.
In a hatch, you will have to install the bulkhead to separate the cell from the drivers compartment.
I have seen several, but not paid attention because I was not there yet.
Some people just put sheetmetal over the tire well or cut it out to mount the cell.
I plan to mount the cell in the well, with an opening in the bottom for the outlets and hoses.
well, see I want to keep basically a stock appearance with this part of my buildup. Plus since my car is a hatch, I dont want the smell of gas in the passenger compartment. So I was planning on running on of those "quick fill" necks on the cell and put a piece of hose to connect it with the stock fuel door on the quarter panel. I am just concern about how to mount the cell. The one I am lookin at is, i believe, 18.5" x 18.5" x 9" deep amd it is a 16 gallon. My main thing is that if i leave the spare tire well there, then the mounting brackets for the cell will be too short. And I cant cut it out because since the filler hole is on the top, I will need the space to install the filler neck and hose. But I guess I could always go to the hardware store, get a couple strips of metal and fabricate my own mounting straps, its only a matter of bending them, not hard at all.
I missed your basic idea. I have not found a cell that I think would mount easily below The spare tire well, or beside it. It would seem like it would work.
Running the filler pipe seemed to be a problem with that location, plus, NHRA wants a metal plate under the cell, so it was not a big benefit to me to do it that way.
well the reason for doing this (most will find it too much work for the reason I am doing it but honestly I don't mind) is I am going to install 17x10.5 rims on the rear and the tail pipes get in the way of that. The only way to move the tail pipes in is to use a narrower gas tank because as the tail pipes go over the axle, they bend outward toward the wheel so the only way to make it go over the axle and still go straight, I will have to use a narrower tank.
