OK, so I finally got my Check Engine light to come off today by rigging up an IAT sensor right after my MAF. Anyway...I took it around to see if it was behaving better, which it was, purring like a kitten. So I took it to the rape station to fill up on gas. Right after I filled it up I turned it on and the attendant told me it was leaking gas. So I walked around and looked and saw a small puddle of gas on the ground. It appears to be leaking right at the base of the filler neck where it connects to the tank. When the car is on and shortly after it is off, a hissing sound can be heard coming from that area. What is the problem?

There is a rubber..."gasket" that holds the filler tube in the gas tank. These are known to rot and create leaks.

Buy one at the Ford dealership (like $20). To install it, remove the filler tube retaining bolts from the car, the drop the tank. Pull the tube out, discard the old gasket, install the new gasket and tube and reinstall everything.

at least it was a small puddle :). i had a huge puddle and most of the gas ended up spilling out that day. it was the filler neck seal as mentioned above. the hissing sound you are refering to is probobly the fuel pump and that is normal.

Hissing even after the car is off? It will still hiss for about 2-3 mins.

Also, can I drive the car around like this to use up some of the fuel before I drop the tank?

Man that thing is a pain to change. Have to drop the tank pretty far down to get it out. Two 5/8 nuts on the tank staps, open the fuel door and undo the 8MM bolts in there. Make sure you have something holding that tank up before you start unbolting. If not it will come down hard. I had my neighbor on his back holding it up with his knees the entire time. Good Luck.

I have the same problem:mad:
I pulled in to a Shell RAPE station and filled up, spilled about 1/2 gallon. the manager came running out yelling at me. She was being a bitch and called the fire dept. HazMat.
I left with her still yelling at me:)

Did it on a 98 GT not long ago. Same deal - he filled up and the next morning he was down below 1/2 tank. Took about an hour to swap it. I used motor oil to lube the new grommet.

I suppose you have a fresh FP for your combo, but if not, now's the time to swap the pump too.

Good luck.
