My 90 4cyl is running funny. I was driving it tonight in the rain when it started to give me trouble at the gas peddle. When i would give it too much gas it would bog down and i would here the tin cany sound in the exhuast too. It eventually died on me and i couldn't get it started.
when i tried to start it, the motor would just piss, fart, jerk, kick and spew blood, even when i had it floored too, it just wouldn't run.
After a buddy showed up with a flash light we found that one of the vacume lines on the tree that hooks up to the climate control is no longer there.
eventually i struck some luck after we sat in the car and enjoyed the storm that was going on, and she fired up. I managed to get all the way home, but couldn't give it too much gas, otherwise is would jerk and fart all over again. if i was nice enough on the pedle it would accelerate for me, but never too fast. i could get the engine to rev to what ever i wanted in first gear if i played the peddle right. but no other gear.
right now i have no idea where to start. some help. i hope theres enough there.

the same thing happened to me about a month ago. the car kept wanting to stall and wouldnt idle unless I gave it gas. If I gave it too much gas it would bog and die. I thought the MAF was the culprit b/c I unlugged the sensor on a hunch and the car smoothed right out. replaced the MAF same thing happened again. I move onto the EGR valve figuring that is the only other damn thing it could be. found out a vacuum line the size of a coffee stir had come off and melted onto the valve cover. long story short, I replaced the line and re-set the idle and now the car runs like a champ.

Usually a good first step is to check for computer trouble codes, check the fuel pressure and also check the timing.Once you have that info you can start to eliminate possibilities.
