Was driving last Friday and pulled away from a stop sign when the engine started chugging and bogged down (ran fine up to this point). Pulled over and put it in park, started idling ok again but when I turned around to head back home it started chugging again, no matter how much gas I gave it it wanted to die. Luckily I was only a few blocks from home when it finally died and I couldn't get it to start again.
Basically it looks like the carb is not getting any fuel at all. With the choke wide open and manually working the throttle, I don't see any fuel spraying out of the jets. I was able to spray starter fluid in there and got it to start off that but dies when it burns all the fluid.
The fuel pump is new, and I have a new fuel filter between the pump and the carb. My fuel gauge isn't working so I double checked the tank with a string and nut to make sure I have gas in the tank (high tech I know!).
Car has been running great lately, no signs of anything going wrong.
Would it be normal if the fuel filter is clogged to just completely stop the flow of fuel? I know there is a little bit of crud in the gas tank, when I pulled the sender last year there was a little bit of junk that drained out but not bad.
What do you guys think? Fuel filter? Fuel pump? Something else entirely? If it's the filter should I think about replacing the gas tank since it clogged up a new filter after maybe 100 miles of driving?
