I pulled the fuel pump and found this...
Fuel pump assembly cap for reference
There is a cracked piece from the shroud that fits around the pump itself that broke. It came from the light area just above my thumb. I found it in the pump basket.
Close-up of the seal that the pump flow tube slides into.
Another...
Could this cause pressure problems? It actually feels like the pump seals OK but my other concern is the cap looks to be degrading. The shroud around the pump is cracked in other places. The piece I found in the bottom of the basket could have been sucked onto the screen I guess and caused problems as well. It may be why my problem was intermittent. The issue is cost. A new pump only is $100 but the whole assembly is $250. I need to test the pump but don't know how or where I can get it tested. This adds to my problem of not knowing exactly what is causing the issue.

I just did a 255lph pump in my 03 a few weeks ago. I had to cut the shroud down because the pump was taller than my OEM pump and it would not fit. In any case, the piece has a clip on both sides that secures it. So as long as it is snug and secure you should not have any problems. As far as the pump seal...I didn't check mine when I did the install (I should have tho). Looking at yours, I can see how it might leak and cause some issues with the pressure. You're better safe than sorry when it comes to fuel, so I'd recommend trying to find one off a parts car or Ebay or Craigslist. They're cheap...
